lrjmllic of Inciters. Under this title, Mr. William Pearson of this

city has commenced an enterprise winch we re-

allv think deserving 01 great success. It is a publication which in the shape of a quarto newspaper cr magazii.e, is intended to furnish the public with a copy of a great number of the mos-t ap

proved and elegant works of English literature. The publication contains 1" pages quarto, and is somen hat larger than the London Weekly Magaxin 1 he paper on which it is prinlcd is not merely beautiful to the eye, but is of the very best quality, and sized, so that one may write

on it without blotting. The typography is nt one neat and legible, and the whole style of the execution ha far more the appearance of London than New York, To show the reader at what a cheap rale a library may be procurred through tiie means of this publication, we may ni rition

that the first number contains the whole of Ma-

ken.ies Man of Feeling, a fourth part of Geldsniit's Vicar of Wakefield ; for all of which the price is sixpence. From what we know respect

inrr this novel and laudable enteprise, we have the

greatest confidence that the selection of oi ks for

the Il:rrpi.ie cr Letters will always be submitted to the decision of gentlemen of such standing in literature, as to ensure that enly the worthiest productions w ill find a place in it. F.renin? 'o.vf. We have intended, as each sncccessive number appeared, to notice this judicious publication. To those who are not apprised of the plan upon which it is conducted, it is merly necessary to observe, that it is a weekly issue of a beautifully printed quarto sheet at .six cents a number, each number containing one or more octavo volumes.

The Ticar of Wakefield,' two of the finest clas

sics in our language, may thus be had for 121 cents, it will be seen, that both from the true taste

and the liberality with which it is conducted,

there can be no publication which promises bet

ter to diffuse abroad a knowledge of the models of

olite literature than the Republic of Letters.

The last number published contains 'The Tales

of the Hall ,' by Crabbe, one of the most vigorous

of modern writers. His style, indeed thoughslri-

kingly original, is often overdone: and his sub

jects are of so coarse a character as frequently to

leave a harsh and unpleasant impression upon the reader, but there is ever a truth to nature in her

humblest guise, w hich renders his minute del in

eatious and skilful dissections of character inval

uable. " Mew York American.

u We have befare us the first numbers of the

Republic of Letters, a publication of ihe design

and scope ot which the reader may remember we

took some notice several weeks ago. In these

tluee numbers, each of sixteen small quarto pa

ges, are contained the whole of Makenzie's Man of Feeling, the whole of the Vicar of Wakefield,

and more than half of Crabbe's best work, the

Tales of the Hall . 1'hese works in the ordinary

shape, occupy four or five duodecimo volumns,

and could not be procured at lrom less than three

to five dollars. In the Renublic of Letters they

occupy three numbers of a paper the size of this

journal, as folded for delivery, and are sold at

the prodigious low price of eighteen cents. This

is making literature cheap indeed, and depriving

poverty ot all excuse lor ignorance. And let it not

be supposed that this extraordinary cheapness is attained by printing the weik on poor materials.

On the contrary, the Urography is uncommonly

beautiful, and the paper "s of a quality much superior to what is commonly used in book printing,

even the best Boston editions, It is as white as

snow, is composed either wholly, or in great part,

ol linen, and may be written upon as smo'.hly and fluently as the sheet on which we are inditimr

this article, which is on Gilpin's best." Evenintr Post. h " A weekly publication, bearing to the above titles, has been undertaken by Mr. Pearson. The design of the work is to place in the hands of all the old standard works, w hich arc now gen--m ......

eraliy reterrcd to as 1 lie acme ol polite literature; a course of reading, particularly followed bv those .1 : r: i. . . . r.;.

oesirous vi inculcating a correcr lasie. l lie undertaking is desirous of inculcating a coirrect taste. The undertaking is deserving, and should

meet with a liberal patronage. Each number

contains lb' pages of closely printed matter; the

typographical execution of w Inch is unsurpassed;

the price is only sixpence being by far the chea

pest, as well as most uselul publication tfiat ha

yet appeared. The present number contains Ma-

kenr-.e's Man of r eelrn, and pirt of Goldsmith' Vicar cf Wakefield." Evening Star.

"Under ibis title, Mr. William Pearson has

commenced a weekly Periodical, which is certainly the cheapest that ever came to our notice. It is intended to embrace only standard works. The first number contains Makenzie's M in of Feeling, and one fourth of the Vicar of Wakefield, the price of which is but six cents. The fiflytwo number, or the years publication, w ill at this

Irate, contain some fifty or sixty of the be5t woiks

in the English language, and corl but three dollars. The piper and typography are besides excellent." Courier and Enqi.in r. cT" Subscriptions received nt this rfiic. " LLTxNKS OE ALL DESCRIPTION '""
