A genlli man has J t -1 called to inform us of the arrival of a large amount of specie, belonging to the ( 'ovemnicnt, w hich is now under a guard of twilve men at the Arsenal, where il has been deposited for safe keeping, in consequence of the dearth of the necessary facilities for its transportation w est
ward. An effort is said to be now making to procure wagons for this purpose, either in consequence of the low stage of the water, or for some other reasons with which we are unacquainted. It is destined for one of the Indian tribes on the Mississippi, or Missouri. This is another fact to prove how "admirably"' the wise system of depo-itc banks
works'. Who ever heard of a sergeant's guard being necessary to protect a govern
ment remittance of eighty or ninety thousand dollars, whilst the public money was in the custody in which the law placed it? The specie, it seems, has got as far on its way to Cincinnati, as Pittsburgh. The next we shall hear of it, probably, will be of its being aground on some sand bank in the Ohio, waiting for a rise in the rier. What becomes, in t!i" mean time, of the eiiag.igemenls of the Government? Have not its draughts for the pay of the army at some of the western posts been already protested .Yal. Int.
NEW GOLD COIN. The Treasury Department has published the following letter from the Director of the Mint, in order that the public may be enabled to distinguish the new from the old coins. " As the date cmild not, by l aw, be alter im!, but the cap and motto might be legally omitted, and would serve plainly to distin guisb the new impression, that course has been adopted at the mint till the commencement of lite next year, when the motto will probably be restored, and the date of the new xear. instead of the omission of the motto, will be found sufficient to indicate the change in the coin."' distinguished by a head of Liberty disencumbered of a cap. On ihe reverse, the surplus motto E. Phi ribus unum,' which lor many veais has occu

the Eagle, is now omitted. These changes, independently of the faci lily to he derived from them, in distinguish
ing the future from the past emissions of our
gold coins, are recommenced by a nearer adherence to the provisions of the law, as well
as by Ihe rules of taste and classic authonly. The views in these respects, presented in my communications of the 9ih tilt, having met your approbation, will, I doubt not, be sus tained by the judgment of the public. In regard t the e mission of Ihe motto above referred to, the same improvement was indeduced in the quarte r dollar in 1S3I, Ihe subject having, hv communication of the 20th January of that vrnr, been subniiUed to the
President, through the de-pat linent, and approve'. 1 . The Eagle of 'In former i-sues weighs 270 grains, the Half Eagle 135 grains, and (be Qaarter f7i grains. The Eagle under the
present law, will weigh 253 grain, the Half
Eagle 129 grains, and ihe Quarter G it grains. These weights are ice ited because desirable to be kept in mind, rather than asalfording a
farther distinction between two classes of
coin since an inspection, nuirli more cursot v than that of weighing, will distinguish them hv Ihe pn-rceling characteristics. The Eagle anil Half Eagle of the new coinage will be le ss in diame ter than those of the (oifiier emissions, and that in a greartcr proP 'llion than the diminution of weight would indicate. This, how ever, though a decide el amendment of our coinage, is of less value as a distinctive maik, since the comparison would requite the presence of coin of both i las-es . I have the honor to be, with great respect, your obedient servant, SAM'L MOORE, I )irector of the Mint. Hon. Levi Wooununv, Secretary of the Treasury.

A KEEN RETORT. A fellow named Lord, residing in N. York,
recently took the liberty of advertising his spouse. The lady, by no means willing to sutler herself to be scandalized, has issued a
card of reply, in which she says:
"After tu-cnti years courtship I was finally in

ty days, your twenty years cloak was thrown
iside, nnd you appeared in your native colors
of meanness, dirtiness, crossness, littleness,
foolishness. Y'ou often said you did not wish mc to stay "that the old b h should go home." And now, with how much truth can you assert that I have "left your bed and board." In conclusion, I proclaim you a sot, coward, anil villian; as the first may be proved at grog shops and taverns; and no one but a coward would bully and abuse a woman. And that the term villian is appropriate, your conduct too plainly shows; I therefore caution ever)' man who values character, not to associate with you; who would by prudence and economy preserve his property, not to trust you. And finally, I say lo every man, trust
rum not; to every woman, touch him not, and lo all, " hands off, Josey." Wild Pigeons.--Vhc Wayne county Herald says, wild pigeons have made an encampment near Relmont in the northern part of Wayne county, la. w hich is at least five square miles
