THE TWII.IOIir HOCB. 'Ti? now the balmy evening hour The sweetest of our summer eves: The sumiiier sua has lost is power Amid the western forest leaves. An-' weary man has sunk to reft, His day's teil o'er; and visions blest Springing from fancy's rosea t bed, Dance lightly round his pillowed head. How beauteous now the western skies', 'Their crimson robes unfurl'd, Tii'U seem to veil from inorta! eyes The vistas to a brighter world. And r.s the tinted bistre fades, And fiick'ring light ivos place to shades The hu!i! brings rest to thoughts of earth, And gives tiie loftier, holier, birth. This is the hour when angels rye. If'ith uftenod smile, pure earthly love; And hail with j -y each half-breatod sih, The zephyrs wait to realms above; And bear them with the win-s of thought, To altars in the diamond wrought. From which they rise an irrc.ci.se dear To Ilri who loves his creatures here. The mother views her lovely chiM, Fatigued! with al! ids sports of day. Sink in slumbers calm and rn;h!. But turns not from his couch away; Fhc nazes on his faint sweet smile, His Auburn curls, and polish'd brow, And prays, no thought of carl lily guile May fade those cheeks, so roseate now. Whore now is proud ambition's frown? Where the (lames of angered breast? Before the beauteous evening flown, They've left the troubled mind to rest; Oh, when rny day of life is o'er, And passion's fire is felt no more, May I behold this billowed scene, In my own heart pass o'er again. Immediate AfeoiiSio.J cl" Slavery. On Friday, the 1st of August, the whole system of slavery in the dominions of Great Britain will be " immediately abolished," and every slave under the dominion of British laws will be "immediately emancipated." Tiie Act of Parliament on lire subject was voted in the House of Commons, on the very

mgnt that Wither force left the world. Its phraseology is remarkable. " IJc it enacted, that all and every the performs who on the said 1st day of August, 183-1,

shall be holdcn in slavery within any such

British colonies as aforesaid, shall upon, and from and after the said first day of August, 1S34, become and be to all intents and purposes free and discharged of and from all manner of slavery, and shall be absolutely and for ever manumitted; and that the children thereafter to be born to any such persons, and the offspring of such children, shall in like manner be free from their birth; and

that from and after the first day of August,

Living irithont f-od. Animals support want much longer than is generally believed. A civit cat has lived 10 days without food, an antelope 20, and a very large wild cat twenty; an eagle has survived 22 days, and a badger one month, and several dogs thirty six days. In the memoirs of the Academy of Sciences, there is an account of a slut, which having been shut up in a counting bouse, existed 40 days without any other nourishment that the stutT on the wool of a matrass, winch she bad torn to pieces. A crocodile will live two months without food, a scorpeon A, a bear 6, a camelion 8, a viper 10. Valliant had a spider that lived nearly a year without food, and was so far from being weakened, that it immediately killed another spider, emrally vigorous, but not so hungry, which was put along with it. The celebrated John Hunter

inclosed a toad between two stone flower pots, and found it as lively as ever after 14 months; and a beetle is know to have been kept in a

state of perfect abstinence for three years, when

it contrived to make its escape. There is also

a well authenticated account of two serpents IiTing in a bottle without an' food, for five years.
