lramhoa!s on lli". St. Joseph's river. A great sensation as produced in South Bend on Tuesday week by the arrival of the steamboat Matilda Barny from Newburvport, at the mouth of the St. Joseph's river. The banks of the river were in many places crowded with spectators, whose loud acclamations manifested the joy (hey experienced in witnessing the success of the first
attempt to introduce steamboats on their beautiful river. The Matilda Barney had on board upwards of 100 passengers, and 10 or 12 tons of merchandize her draught of water with this
load was only 13 inches. We have not learn
ed how high up the St. Josephs s river she is intended to ply, but we understand that she is ex
peeled to ascend the Elkhart to Goshen. Ano
ther steamboat has been built at Detroit, and is
now on her way to St Joscpth' son which she is
intended to idv regularly. The introduction of
these boats on the St. Joseph's will do much to
increase the ivealth of the already prosperous
country through which it flows, by affording its citizens a certain and expeditions mode of con
veying their surplus produce to market. Pro
ppity along the river has aheady advanced in
value.
In addition lo Ihe above gratifying intelligence
we are also enabled to state that the Iron Work
at Mishawaka, near South Bend have made a successful commencement of operations. The
ore is found to be much tidier than was anticipa
led by the mnt sanguine fiiendsot the underta king, and the iron manufactured is of a very su
perior quality.
