Eera was a pretty sly. cute crittur, and Ichabod vvarn't quite so much so, tut was goad natnred, and some folks tho'l he never would cut his eye teeth, though I al ways thought in the long run, he hatl a considerable share of mother wit, tut lock his own way in ihowin ea't. Well when they ciime to divide off the sheep,
for the Deacon had nue of the biggest flocks of

Old Billy you know was a pet rani, and Ichabod loved him almost as he di I any thing in the woild f)r he had taken care of him almost ever since he was a lamb. So Ezra thought that Ichabod
w ould take that share, seeing that old billy was

the sheep are all divided off; and seein ils you, and I elont want ta lake no advantage on you, yon may make your choice ol pens.' Ichabod

you are surrounded by such a raft of snuffle

He got old Bdly to be sire, but then he got an evetlastin set of scabby scamps along with him. And all the neighbors about say to this day
that upon the hull, tho1 Ezra is a pretty shaip fellow, they samehow think Ichabod got the

seein that the Temperance Society was now
the biggest and strongest in the country, it was all important to git that on the Gineral's side. ' But that's impossible,' says the Gineral, for some of our strongest leaders would jist as soon go barefoot as to give up whiskey.' What says the Gineral, would become of , and he
was jist goin to give a good list of whiskey folks, when the other one went on tellin how
it could be done; lhat a new invention was dis
covered to make whiskey that any man could drink, and git drunk too, without showin on't
no more than if he drank water all the while; and the hull tiick on't was in altering the worm and instead of havin that crooked, to make it straight, for the crook of the worm was the hull cause of folks feelin round when they diank whiskey. So now by this discovery any man could bt a good lempeiance man arid drink as mu h whiskey as he pleased, and no one would lie the wi-cr on't. The Gineral was so taken with this notion, he strpp'd lookin any further for my letter; he tell'd the Cabinet right off to to work and it up a proclamation 111 favor f ttmpe ranee; and lo havu all the crooked worms alteied to straight ones. Why, says he there' no tellin lo what a pitch of glory my Government will go yet; when any man may drink what be pleases and no insrtal can tell Ihe diffemnce, and whilst Mr. Jefferson could say we 'are all Federalists and we are all De

Book of Nature,
A Monthly Periodical, Edited by an Association of Scientific Gentlemen, embellished with dor
10 fine quarto copperptate engruvwigs in eutn number. THE publication oflhis work was commenced in June, 1833, since which ten numbers have been published, fulfilling thus far, the promise of utility, which the prospectus originally held forth. In these ten numbers, ninety nine quarto engravings have been published, embracing several hundred different subjects in the various departments of natural history, and gfving in a small compass, and at the cheapest rate, an ex tended view of the various phenomena of anima ted nature. Each plate is accompanied with a brief but satisfactory description, so written as at convey a clear idea of the same, without being either of tiresome length, or so technically written as to be unintelligible to the general reader. More than one hundred engravings will
be given annually, furnishing subjects sf admiration from year to year, particularly tothejuvenile branches of the family, w hiie the artist and the student ofnatural history, may confidently refer lo them on all occasions of doubt.
The work appears about the first ol every month, at the low rate of six dollars per annum. Since its commencement the publisher, has found it necessary to introduce a larger quanti ty of popular reading than at first contemplated, thus materially enhancing its cost to him and ils value to the public. A limited number of copies have been printed, most of which are alrendy subscribed fur, rendering it necessary for those who still desire the work, to be prompt in for warding their orders. When the present vol is completed, to non subscribers the charge wiJi he eight dollars for the same numbers which 1 11 Z i' ! I. -a ! I..! IW.fT-tff-A tlllD
