Time and hi Children. Time paused one day as he went his round For he felt an inward pain, And he took his seat on a lofty ground, With a melancholy strain; i "O that my daughter Tiuth so bright, With Falsehood couM hefp pare; j For ! fee he troubles the world outright, And covers with woes his face." Extract of a letter to a gentleman in this city : Portland, July 6.
Dear Sir, I arrived in safety this morning, at 8, having passed an hour or
more, yesterday afternoon, among a shoal of Sea Serpents, three of which, measure from 80 or 90 to 120 or 130 feet, I distinct ly saw with ihe nakeo eye, and af
terwards carefully examined through a
glass. They were laying full length on
the water, occasionally luting their heads
four or five feet above the surface., and
showing i'O or 30 buuehes, or stiake like
indubtuons at a time. Their heads bore a resemblance to the pickerel's, and the crease of the mouth, marking the d i vision ot thejaws, was like
that of a common snake. The engine of
the boat was stopped, and for three quarters of an hour w e had a cool and delibe rate view of these monsters. Such looking objects 1 never beheld. fjr Since th above was received, we uae conveisi-d with several people who

The senses fallible mlnesses, When we bathe in the sea, or in a cold bulb, we are accustomed to consider the water as colder than the air, and the air colder than the clothes which surround us. Now all those objects are, in fact, at the sarre temperature. A thermometer surrounded by the cloth of our coat, or suspended in the atmesphere, or immersed in the sea, will otand at same temperatuie. A linen shirt, when first put on, will feel colder than a cot ton one, and a fiannel shirt-will actually feel warm; yet all these have the same temperature. The sheets of the bed feel cold, and blankets warm; the Slanket3 and sheets, however, are e qually warm. A still, calm, atmospheie, in summer, feels warm; but it a wind arises, the same atmosphere feels cool. Now, a thermometer sus pended under shelter, and a calm place, will indicate exactly the same temperature as a the imomeler on which the wind blows.

site i the late fire, on !lain street, the other day, we were not a little surprised to see a steam engine busily engaged in the laudible employment of passing up bricks and mortar from the ground to the workman above. Anon the engine grappled with a timber or two, and hauled them aloft to their places, and then retired to its tubs of mud. It proceeds with all the gravity of n l urk in its task; and, by means of ropes and pullies, distributes materials through buildings upon either side of the one in which it is located. Technicalities. We believe there is no profession more fond of using technicalities than that of the physician; and too many people arc apt to think a doctor skillful when he makes copioususe of them. It has been told us that a lady, after having been bled by a physician, saw, with great alarm, that the akin around the wound caused by a lancet, turned blue (a common occurrence.) She immediately discharged the doctor, and sent for anothor to ak advice concerning hvrperiloit.i situation.
