WE aim to overthrow SLAVERY in this country, for the following among other reasons : Because the subjects of it are regarded and treated as cattle as property, instead of rational, immortal beings. Because it leaves more than two millions of men, women and children without any protection for their persons. Because it is altogether aod absolutely a system of adultry, prostitution, cruelty ami theft. Because it is contrarv to the laws of God. Because it necessarily makes the op pressor and ihe oppressed mutual etiemies breeds insurrections, multiplies crimes weakens the bonds of society, and jeopards the lii.es, happiness and interests of all parties. Because il retards the prosperity of the nation impoverishes those who uphold it, dishonors the American name, and expo ses our land to the severest judgments of Ilenven. ISAAC CHAMBKK I IN, aid. C'uu t j Stsiivns. J who Uynii convicted ot burglary in the tirst de gree in having entered the dwelling house ol ftlr. Munson, in Cherry-street, by means of false keys, and stealing ironi tne bedroom where MuHson and kis wife were sleeping, a patent leVer atch and articles of clothing, to the value of about eighty dollars. The prisoner was sufpected by tbe oolite officers, and arrested the day but one loilowing the burglary, at his boarding house, where they found the watch belonging to Mr. Munson in the prison er s pocKet, and on being brought to the police office, the shoes which he had were identified wlth a part 0f the pioperty stolen. Nearly all the arti cles loel were recovered. The prisoner when convicted earnestly entreated ihe court to pass upon him sentence of deatti. 1 bis they informed him could not be done, when he requested that itiej. would sentence him to solitary imprisonment. Ihe court remarked that such h .entente would be unjust to the people, as they had a right to expect that the prisoner would earn hie living by labor, ntid not be rnainUe4 in idleness. Ryan from appear ance is not ovor thirty years of age, and when arrested had only been out of the slate prison three week, where he had served out an imprisonment of five years, for robbing u jewlery store in Broadway b) means of fake keys. rrevious to that sentence he had been repeatedly in the penitentiary at intervals of time commencing in 1S82, for lacemes usually committed 'by weans of false keys. kingston, Ulster county, and is only twenty years of age. Eight or teu cloaks stolen recently from the same hotel, wt-rs regained by the owner! from various pawnbrokers upon the prisoner's voluntary admis-ioris, where he had pledred them from time to time. In his pocket two opened letters were found addressed to George? Ltland and Amos Leland, wMh had been transmitted by mail from Phila delphia, and must have reached this city the very day of the prisoner's ar rest. How they came into his posses sion is a matter as yet involved in con jecture The following day, as one of the letters imports, the sum of five hun dred dollars was t have been remit ted, which in all probability would have fallen into his hand by the same means which he had adopted to niocare the two former letter. Fortu nately this was prevented by his timely arrest. The first information Mr. Leland had of these letters, which bo expected and could not account for (heir not earning to hand, was through the police efllce. Courier. Attrocious Miirdtr. A murder of the darkest die was committed in Champlain last week. The facts, as far at we can learn them, are these: A MUs Stevenson, a young lady about 17 years old, left her father's house to go to Champlain village, about two miles distant, on Wednesday of last week, for the purpose of purchasing some articles at the stores. She purchased the articles, and left for home about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. When nitht grew nigh, her friends, alarmed at her tbsence, proceeded to find her, and an ineffectual search was kept up until Wednesday of this week, when she a was found about five rods from the road leading to her home, with a hat dkerchief in her mouth and her throat cut from ear to ear No dobr exijt as to the cauie of the murder; but tiie villain who perpetrated it is ret un known. Plattsburg Rt-p. Heroic Wife The family of Mr. Diamond have been for some time the only inhabitants of Calf Inland, fit u-i-ted at the extreme outer edge ol Boston harbor. Last week, the lather - f the family, haviiig been for some time in a feeble state of health, died. Tbo only persons present on the Island at the time of this melancholy occurren e were his wife and her family of sev n small children. In this afflicti g sitution, being destitute of any other mer.s of sending intelligence or procuring assistance from the neighboring inlands, the wife, leaving the corpse of her husband to the iaie of her children, launched a small boat, and tho' lh sea was quite rough, ihe wild blow ing, and the rain falling. ?he effected her passage to Gallup's M:ttid, a distance of more than three mi! where she was fortunate enough to find two men, who retuncd with h-r. Suh had been the energy with which th peculiarity of her situation hml iospered her, that she actually coi sumed shorter lime, in passing from ner home to Gallup's bland, rowing roshanded all the way, than her iiiei;!ly assistants did, in returning by the same passage. Singular Cmtoms. There i a cus tom proper to Sicily, which I must not forget to mention. If any man h i- -1 estate, be it house, land, viotyaiti. uk neighbor of the purchaser, f".. r t! space of an entire year afterward, rn y eject him by an advance of prtc . H vain would the first purchaser j'Ve more to the original owni-r. Tb ? i: gular law is generally evaded by a falsehood. The purchase money i stated, in the articles of agreement, ,it a higher sum than has been agreed upon in the presence of four witnee?. There it another no less singular Jaw in Sicily, aceording to which any man can oblige his neighbor to sell his house, if he will pay him throe times its value. The intention of this law was the improvement of the towns. It was to encourage the possessors of arge houses to purchase the humble abodes of the poor. Great Potatoe Story. We mention: d a few weeks since, that Levi Lane. Esq. of Hampton Falls, planted one potato last season, which produced .S7 potatoes, making two bushels! Now this we tliought a prcttj good story hut our friend Harriman, of the Haverhill Iris, tells a better. Mr. Geo. French, of Andover, has raised from a single potato, 447, which measured threu bushels and one peck. We acknowU edge ourselves beat. Exc. Xews Letter
