Alexandria, attended by acommtl'ce of the cor John Butties,
poratioo of that place.
The circumstances of his death are reported
thus: He had gone to Alexandria to visit a
friend on Sunday; he passed the evening at his friend's house, and left it, in the midst of the
storm then raging, to go to the wharf, with a
view to take uassaee on board the mail bnat
Sydney, which leaves Alexandria at about 9 o' clock, P. M, for the city. He was attended by a servant, who left him when he had shown him in sight of the wharf. This was the lasl seen or heard of him uutil his body was found on Moaday afternoon. It is beyond a donbt that he walked into the slip, and struck his head in falling, or he would have saved himself, being an expert swimmer.
This melancholy occurrence cast a gloom yesterday over all Congress. Its fatality, independently of tbe merits of the deceased, pro dured a deep sensation. By those who knew him, his death is doubly grieved, his character for talents and integrity being embellished hy the most endearing personal qualities. His funeral took place from the eapitol yesterday afternoon, and was attended by all Congress, both houses having adjourned as sooc as hi death was announced yesterday.

Public Landt. The subject of federal lands has been before the senate, ia different forms, since Saturday last, and is now under discussion on Mr. Clay's bill to distribute the proceeds among fhe states. It was previously discussed on a bill to grant to Missouri, Mississippi, and Louisiana 500,000 acres each
for internal improvement, similar to a bill which had already granted Ohio 900,000 acres for that object, and Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama, 4 or 600.000 each. The bill to mke the grunt to Missouri, &c. was ordered to a third reading, but, on Monday, when ta ken up for a third reading a most violent opposition was made to it by Mr. Clay, Mr. Foot, aud some others, and finally it was laid n the table. On yesterday Mr. Clay's own
bill was taken up. and he occupied three
hours in sustaining thu views of his report,

the pi ice of any part of the lands, not even
the refuse which had been any uutnber uf
