HOPE. See through the clouds that roll in wratb, Yon little star benigr.ant, peep, To light along their trackless path The wanderers of the starry deep. And thus, oh! Hope, thy lively form In sorrow' gloomy night, shall be The a'ar that looks through cloud ad storm Upon a dark and moonless sea. When heaven is all serene and fair, Full mary a br ghter gem we meet; 'Lis when tt-e tempest hovers there, Thy beam it most divinely sweet. The rainbow, with the sun's decline, Like faithless friends, will disappear; Thy lights, dear star, more bnghtly ahinef When all is wail and sorrow here. And though Aurora's stealing gleam May W3ke a morning of delight, 'Tia onlv thy encbat'ng beam Will smile amid . ffic ion's night. SEA SICKXESS. The medical journal intimates that foity five drops of laudanum is a sovereign specific against sea sickness; and we have only to say, that if it be true, the discovery of the remedy should and will be immortal. Hervey, who first found out the circulation ef thp vital fluid, and Jenner, w ho taught mankind a preventive of that most loathsome and disgusting of human maladies, the 3mall-por, were both mere sciolists and nostrum mongers, compared with the illustrious Grenville, to whom is ascribed the heaven bcrn discovery we have just mentioned. The man w ho can cure or prevent a eea sickness, has already squared the circle! We had rather be thai man
than to have found out the longitude, Indeed, it strikes us that diseases of all sorts, (except per
chance the king s evil and the malady of disap
pointed office seeking) are as good as banished from the world, if Dr. Grenville has really invmltd a cure for sea sickness; for we should like
ship, and whenever he heard the slightest noise below, he shook it over them, and seemed eager to exercise it. I was quite pleased to take this hateful badge out of his hand, and I h ive kept it ever since, as a horrid memorial of reality, should I ever be disposed to forget the scene I witnessed. As soon a9 the poor creatures saw 3, looking down at them, their daik and melanchoy visa ges brightened up. They perceived something of sympathy and kindness in our look?, which they had not been accustomed to, and feeling instinctively that we were friends, they imme.
diately began to shout and clap their hands
iOneof them had picked up a few Portuguese
words, and cried out, "viva! viva!" The wo men were particularly excited. They all held up their arms, and when we bent down and shook hands with them, they could not contain their delight; they endeavored to scramble upon their knees, stretching up to kiss our hand, and we understood that they knew we had come to liberate them. Some, however, hung down their heads in apparent hopeless dejection, some were greatly emaciated, and some, particularly
children, seemed dy ing. But the circumstance which struck us the most forcibly, was, how it was possible for such a number of human beings to exist, packed up and wedged together as tight as they could cram, in low cells, three feet high, the greater part of which, except that immediately under the grated hatchways, was shut out from light
or air, and this when the thermometer exposed to the open sky, was standing in the shade on( our deck, at 90 degrees. The space between decks was divided into compartments, 3 feet 3
inches high; the size of one was 16 feet by 18,
and the other 40 by 21: into the first were crammed women and girls, into the second the
men and boys; 22G fellow creatures were thus

they grew rabid at the sight of it. There is
nothing w hich slaves, in the mid passage, suffer
trom so much as the want uf water- It is some
times usual to take out casks filled with sea water, as ballast, and when the slaves are received on board, to start the casks and fill them with
fresh. On one occasion, a ship from Bahia neglected to change the contents of the caskg , and ou their midpassage, found to their horror, they were tilled with nothing but salt water. All the slaves on board perished! We could iude ot
the extent of their sufferings from the afllicting sight we now saw. When the poor creatures
were ordered down again, several of them came and pressed their hands against our knees, with looks of the greatest anguish, at the tiros
pect oi returning to the horrid place of suffer-
erary. Foreign and Domestic News, were not at leit equal to any other Journal, it u ou!d scarcely have ac
