IS THE JUNE SW(M< <>N This qu< ’i> is almost an annual affair as the San Francisco Giants. every year about this time, •■tart a downward path in the Nati nal league that always (rentes a lot of coinmetit. The G.anU this year broke fr m the pate with a tremendous drive that tarried them to the top cf the League and it looked like n one w..s going t catch them. However, it is a yearly affair that the Giants start fast and then t ames the June Sw on that puts them back in the pack. THE (HANTS HAVE QUITE an array of talent. They have wn sotting on the bench every game that could make just ab ut any line-up in the majors, but st H things’ are starting to go again: t them and they have 1 st their irst place standing and ate floundering around losing ground lapidly. The Los Angeles D dgers. another talent-laden-club. 1 s passed them and now it looks like tae I> dgers are on the move. THE TWO WEST COAST Clubs are natural rivals. This is no new as they were just the same way when they were in Brooklyn and New York, However. these two clubs .now have many of the real stars of the g ime today and have talent that just loesn't get int the line-up day in and day out THE DODGERS THRU MONday’s action, have moved 2' 2 games ahead in the Senior Cii. < uit. The Giants aie second and then comes a big drop to the third place Cincinnati Reds, who piesently aie eight games out. Much of the Dodgers offensive power has come from the Davis boys. These two fleet outfielder^ are hitting up a s. rm. Tommy is hitting .331 and Willie .322. ■U— —IM ————————W THE GIANTS ARE STILL riding on the powejful bats of Willie Mays. Orlando Cepeda, Felip ■ Alou and Harvey Kuenn. Willie Mc<’< vey has also been chipping in with some long hits in his conversion attempt in the outfield. However, the Giants received some real strong pitching early in the year to boost their chances. NOT MUCH TROUBLE IS brewing behind the two fiont clubs in this league but it is interesting to see the Houstcn Colt 13 s as they have surprised many a man wtih their current seventh and eighth place standings. They have been carried by the booming bat of Ramen Mejas, the former Pittsburgh player who has really cme into his own at Houston. St Louis and Pittsbhurgh are the < ther two club,-, in the first division us they are right on the Reds’ heels. IN THE AMERICAN League, things are just reversed. Ususally the Yankees are making a run-a-way of the league and the National loop is tigiit, but this year the American league is tight to date Minnesota is currenty in fir.< place by a whisker, but that can change every day. Bunched within s’j games of the t p are sewn te .ms. New York is currently tied with Cleveland for sec id. Los Angeles fourth DeH it fifth, Chicago sixth and Baltimore seventh. VERY OBVIOUS ARE THE injuries in this league. Mantle and Ford are on the injured list a‘ New York am! no team h ses two like this and d c.-n’t miss then Kaline and Lary have n ,p hed this for Detroit and new Bruton joins them < n the injured list The- Tigers were within one g me । f the top wh m Kahne got his injury and Lary's absence every f urth game really hurts. MINNESOTA HAS BEEN the real surprise team. With a couple of rookies fitting into their bnc-up like seas ned vets, they have made hay Rich Rollins and Bernie Allen are -esponsible for a lot of their success. Vic Power hasn’t hunt them either ag they haw a set line-up for the first time in years. Williams' Play Summer & Smoke Opening Here From [>ast experience one has the right to expec a great deal of enjoyment from any film adapted from a Tennessee Williams play and in the Hal Wallis Technicolor and Panavision screen version f William;.’ "Summer and Smoke," coming to the Rialto Thoatie. the enjoyment is abundantly provided. Credit must go to all departim nts. but especially the brilliant cast headed by Laurem c Harvey and Geraldine Page I’ll poign ml love story with its .strong sex Conflict is handled in very good taste under the capable direction of Peter Glenville. It was Glenville, one of Britain’ formost theatre talents who directed the Tennessee Williams play for the London stage. “Summer and Smoke" emerges as a touching study of frustrated love revolving around Miss Page as Alma, the repressed daughter of a Southern small-town minister and Harvey, the handsome, lechrous young doctor who lives next door. The full magnetism of Williams’ writing has been captured by Glenville in this moving and powerfully dramatic film which must stand as one of the alltime greats in film history In addition to the excellent characterizations of Page and Harvey, other notable performances are eont ribut ed by Rita
