Social Evening And Dinner Honors Father A. Letko A dinner and soccial evening planned by the St. Patrick’a Womens' CNb and the Holy Name Booiety took place recently as part of the celebration of their pastor’s stiver jubilee. The Rev. Anthony Letko was honored by his parish in the basement rooms ©f the school ajid was attended by more than 250 persons. John Boimos. North Liberty, was maMer of ceremonies. Organ music was played throughout the evening by Arno Gnmert, Elkhart. Mr. Solmoa gave a talk about their priest’s many and varied activities and presented him with a watch and a cash gift from the parish. Responding graciously, Rev. Letko accepted the watch and the cash gift for his personal use, and thanked everyone present. Seated at the head table with Rev. Letko were Rev*. Herman Shoudel, Fish Lake; Rev. Joseph Horvath. South Bend; the honor guest's two brothers, the Rev Louis Letko, Hammond. and Charles Letko. Munster, and his Sister, Mrs. Agnes Blocher. Munster. Also Mr. and Mrs Ora Harder and Mr. and Mrs. Myron Truhler. Mrs. Joseph Spinsky served as general chairman, assisted by Mrs. Albert Van Wanzeele, Mrs. Robert Hiler, Mrs. Joseph Quebbeman, Mrs. Mayotte Arseneau and Mrs. John Powell. On Tuesday, May 22. nearly 200 persons attended r high mass hero at which the priest marked his silver jubilee. After the service, Rev. Letko entertained everyone at breakfast in the school hall. Tables were decorated with silver and the head table was centered with an ar. rangement of red gladioli. Breakfast rolls which were served with fruit juice and coffee had been baked by the priest's brother. Charles Letko, a chef at the Palmer House. Chicago. Also in his honor was the annual talent show put on by the school children when a “This Is Your Life’’ was done in pageant form with acts and talent between acts. Columbia College at Dubuque, ]owa and St. Meinard Seminary. He served assistant pastorates at St. Joseph. Elwood; St Joseph. Mishawaka; and All Saints, Hammond, before being named pastor of St Patrick's in Walkerton on Sept. 1, 1947. The following year he sought to hold services for the resort people, spending Sunday at Fish Lake, and for a number of years the masses were celebrated out of doors. In 195.3 Rev Letko began working on a church structure He did most of the work himself, directing the rest. The attractive California redwood chapel was dedicated in 1955. The Rev. Father Letko continued to serve there as a priest until Rev. Herman Schoudel was installed in 1958. is reported there were 21 families on the register. The parish has increased by now to more than 170 families. He has more than 175 converts and validated nearly 100 marriages since he has been in Walkerton He is loved for his friendly manner and known for his fabulous memory, knowing all the school children and each parishioner by name. Lincoln Twp. Home Demonstration Club The Lincoln Townsnip Home Demonstration Club met Tuesday, June sth, at the Walkerton Town Chib The business meeting was led by president, Bertha Daube. The song of the month. “Sweet and Low," was sung and Happy Wedding Anniversary to Mrs. George Seitz. Twenty-four members answered roll call. Cancer bandages will be sewed June 12th at the club house. Mrs. Cloyd Smith gave a short talk on varicose veins, explaining the cause and care <of them. । The club is Invited to Johnson Township’s Salad Bar June 20. We are asked to be there by 12:30. Mrs. Firk, of the St. Joseph County Cancer Society, gave us a talk pertaining to the seven warning signs of cancer. She stated that 85 per cent of all cancer could be cured if medical attention was given in time. She then showed pictures of the
