ished 6th this year and won a unanimous vote for rookie of the year honors. He was an outstanding man in the qualification runs as well. Parnell) Jones, the se< ond year driver who set on the pole, was the pre-race favorite. He ended up in sixth place but was the third highest money winner as he led more laps than anyone at the $l5O per lap rate. He is a hard, fast driver and was a little surprising in his seventh place finish. However he did Hose his brakes in the race ;aid did have a little trouble because of this, especially coming ir. the pits. He was timed in the fastest lap of the race as he toured the 56th lap at a speed of 148.295, the fastest ever clocked in a race on a crowded track. SOME SHORTS FROM HERE and there about the race follow. Len Sutton, who finished second this year in a speed of over 140 miles per hour, started his fifth race this year but finished his first. His best previous showing was a distant placing afti r touring 110 laps in the 1961 race. He has been in five in a row now and looks to be a real th’eat in years to come. JACK TURNER, INVOLVED in the four-car accident with Chuck Rodee, Allen Crowe an ■ Bob Christie was injured but not seriously as the fouri') turn spin out involved these four cars early in the race. He was in the big accident last yeii on the nuin stiwight-a-way in which his *ar went end over end, but hasn't been the party at fault m either wreck. He just scents to he in the wrong place at th > right time. SOME TALK ABOUT WHY Pamelli Jones fell back in the race raised this comment by one veteran driver. 'Sure he lost his brakes and it cost him some time in making his pit stops, but he slowed down on the track and you don’t use your breaks while driving.'' It was quite a thing to sec Parnell!s crew stop the brakeless car in the pits as once a pile of tires was put in front of him and on another Occasion, four mechanics met him down the pit area and simply grabbed hold and ding then- feet That’s hard on man and shoes SHORTY TEMPLE MAIN. A veteran of the track, pushed his car for part of the .500 miles he toured after he spun out and hit the inside wall on the main straight-a way. ending up against the inside wall He crawled out of the cockpit and pushed the Thur. car until his pit crew raced to assist him. Then in the pits, a new wheel was put on and he got back in the car and moved on around the track with only a slight delay to win the 11th position. Ho was driving as haul as ever after the wreck. A J. FOYT, THE 1961 WlNner, was moving well in the field and looked like a sure challenger for the lead when he* lost a wheel on the ba* k stretch. This ended Foyt’s adventure* in his car. but the lead-footed Texan was back in the race in Elmer George’s car. ELMER GEORGE’S CAR WAS a busy one in the course of the race He started the race but turned the ear over to Paul Russo after Russo’s had trouble early in the race. Foyt then relieved Russo, but after a few laps, pulled into the pits and George hopped back in the cockpit again to drive it to its 17th place fini-h. Foyt said the cockpit was too small for him as these mechanical speed balls are made to fit the driver, GENE HARTLEY, DRIVING the South Bend entry, the Drtwrys Special, took several turns of the track in the race .and turned the car over to an ar.xious Bill Chevsbuurg who tried three more laps bu w is forced to retire fwom the race as the steering had gon* out on the car This car blew an engine in the carboration tests on Monday prio • to the race. ALL IN ALL. A REAL EXciting race was enjoyed by what must have been another record attendance. The fact that no serious injuries occured from the four yellow lights and the tremendous driving of some of the drivers, kept the fans anxious at all Hines, added to the usual color and fun enjoyed at this great sporting event, Cagney Heads Cast Os Wilder Comedy "One, Two.
