Plans Made To - Save Rural Roads In Our County In recent action by the County Commissioners, a voluntary program was planned to save ttw extreme damage of county roads during the critical jmriod of spring that is coming Dining the time thawing is taking place the county roads, especially the blacktop roads, suffer heavily from the traffic and the proposed plan is to keep trucks, school busses and other heavy vehicles off the road for this short perI jod John F Solmos, president of the board, said he would ask the co-operation of township trustees and other school authorities, grain elevator operators, milk company owners, farmers and others who use heavy vehicles on county roads. SolmoH said the buses and trucks do considerable damage to roads during the period of thawing. He said he has been informed by road specialists, that the severe winter may cause an above-average amount of damage to county roads. In some counties tn Indiana, ordinances to this effect are valid. This covers only the short period of the serious thaw. However. it was pointed out that there is not much time for such an ordiname thia year and that any action must come voluntarily. This could save thousands of dollars t>f damage that expel ts claim is largely caused by the heavy vehicles Solmos said school buses cause much damage to road They exceed the 111-ton Io id limit m eff<s t on mos*( roads and “they travel on almost every road in the county twice every day," hr said Sohm s said he doesn’t favor closing the schools during the period of th owing I dnt we why the parents can’t u.a- then automobile-) to g-t the < hddi<*n to hr said. The p<r:<-l when mo 4 damage wHI occur probahiv won’t last more Hum a week or two." Solmos said blacktop roads are e p< tally vulnerable to damage when the frost is leaving me ground. "It makes no sense to me for the county to spend >2OO.(MM) a year blacktopping new roads and then to have the roads destroyed by heavy vehicles in a week or two every spring" said Solmos Solmos said the commissioners will notify vehicle operators when they should avoid uMlng county roads "We hope they will cooperate because I m certain if they stay off these roads, they will have a lot better driving during the rest of the year," he said. Solmoa and the other two commis loncis. John E Hanley and Marcel C. VanLu Walle said the amount of damage to the roads has not been determined yet because of the almost continuous cover of ice and snow. Hanley said he expected the damage to be extensive because the ground under the r< ads is frozen tn a depth that is greater than normal. ELEMENTARY MUSIC DEIT.
