When Alexander Graham Bell came up with this wonderful invention. probably not even the wildest figment of his imagmaton could foresee the future of lids discovery. The imagination of picking up a telephone and calling from continent to continent, could not have been foreseen. Nor the use of the telephone to send pictures over wire to make on the spot news coverage possible, or to pu k up a phone and dial a number, giving y<»u immediate connection with another part of this country. Coukl he nave imagined that telephones could be put on an entirely mobil basis as using a phone from a means of transportation to call the off re or home, or to make arrangements for the future while enroute to a pla« e without even leaving the scat you are in. , Actually, a German by the name of Ref* made the fust telephone and told of it in IN6I, but until Bs'll perfected and patented it in 1^76. it was basic* ally unheaid of. From this Invention and patent, the telephone lias come to what we know it as today. । The telephone is a very lmpurtant part of our lives a* we live today. A couple of decades ago. the telephone was more or h-ss a luxury in many homes, but now the telephone i* very jniportant. It is also very important in business as a phone call mtn replace many hours of time in business. However, the telephone is not a plaything Os course anyone that ha# a ph<»ne pays for it but a little courtesy and common sense could and should be used ty all Recently there have been a large number of Monymma phnne calls being made m this area. They are not necesearily made at random, but are usually directed at one person This type of prank or trick, whatever it Walkerton Independent Robert E- I rbia. EdiUr Pl BUSHER Independent-News Co. can be classed as. is a rather disturbing thing. Answering a phone and having no answer. a phone placed on the cradle after you answer, or conversation without any meaning and from someone you don’t know and who won t identify themselves, is i rather low type stunt. A phone is also a great answer to a problem in time of emergency. A prankish phone call sue h as this can be very dis turbmg to the receiver as one has no idea of what is happening if their answer is no answer on the calling end. Also very popular lately is the •eliciting i<y some business s. Also m this area has been this type of phone call with no identification as to whom is calling, but the ohi selling line. This is particularly true with one company at present who uses the phone many hours a <Uv for this type of advertising. However, if the pers >n doesn’t seem interested, no identification is given. Phone calls of this type are more bothersome and disturbing than that proverbial ’ Wrong Number" at three in the morning A little courtesy on the phone rn^y be returned to one some day if thqy could only realize it. The tying up of the line for such foolishness bad enough d«spite the time waited with such a call. Should it be a time of emergent y is at hand when some of this t^vpo »ailing is going on, it could be most serious. A busyline is as worthless as no line at ah and with the modern dia. system and direct dialing that is possible, a line can be tied up without ever breaking into if necessary.
