heading DOWN THE FI- ] nal honestretch, two races of different types and just reversed from what the usual story is, has developed in the major leagues. In the National League it would take a miracle if anyone were to catch the high-fly- < jng Pirates. They are in quest of their first pennant in 33 years. ! HOWEVER IN THE AMERL can League, where the Orioles of Baltimore are causing the big surprises, three teams are stdl running close with a real dingdong battle at hand. The guidance of Paul Richards has steered the Baltimore "Kids'' into the top spot thanks to a recent three-game sweep over the Yankees last week end. THE STORY FOR YEARS has been the Yanks in front by September and the National league battling it out with two, three or four teams still in contention. The Pirates, for several years, have been picked to hold up pretty well, especially last year, but they folded rather early. This year net too much attention was given to them prior to opening day, but they

have been one of the real clutch teams of many a year the way they keep winning the tight ones and coming up with the late rally to tep their opponents. a COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO figures on this year’s race dis closed that the Pirates had won 29 games this season coming from behind in the 7th. Bth or 9th innings. This remarkable feat is more than enough to keep them cn top. There have been many games where they trailed at these late points and came back with all the runs necessary. TRAILING THE PIRATES with still a chance and th.it is about all. is Milwaukee, St. Louis and D>s Angeles. It appears a race for the other three money places is all these teams are in a fight fcr. The Braves have been a pretty consistent team since the start of the season, but never a real hot one. The Cardinals started the season like they were fighting for last, but came to life nicely and moved as high as second in the standings. The bad start cost them any chance cf catching the Pirates. IXXS ANGELES, THE DEFEN-
ing world champions, just didn't jell among themselves. When their pitching was good, they didn’t hit well and visa versa. The Giants were the real disappointment team in the National league . . . mostly coming after they canned manager Bill Rigney. Pittsburgh’s tans are going wild and they have a right to as that is abcut what the Pirates have dene themselves in all but cinching the pennant for 1960. IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE the Orioles have played ball beyond all expectations. It was felt by most that their young pitching staff would fvld before the season was over. If anything. they are getting stronger. Their staff is pretty well balanced with everyone getting a turn in Hie hero's role. They have had some unexpected help in the infield this year from such rookies as Hansen and Breeding around the second sack, and the play of Brooks Robinson at 3rd, plus the firstbasing and hitting of Jim Gentile. This man Gentile had almost given up on himself, but Richards waived his magic wand and what happened is fabulous. THE YAN K S STI LL ARENT out of it by anymeans. They have long been a team that < an stand pressure and certainly have the horses to do it. Their pitching has been eratic, but the long ball power they have can offset a certain degree of this The Sox need real help if they are going to repeat. Their pitching has been their big disappoinl-

Tncnt this year. Last year they ww-e stingy with runs, but this year it is a different stoiy. The two mainstays last year, Shaw and Wynn, certainly have had a fair share of troubles. Even though Wynn is pitching good ball now, his total of 11 wins is a far cry from the 22 he had last year. He is over 40 and that is the time th* y stai t to slip fast. SHAW JUST HASN'T BEEN the same pitcher as last year. He has had trouble all year long Billy Pieroe, the forgotten man in the World Series last year, has been their best stopper and he has missed some action with a hip injury. Bauman, acquired last winter from Boston, has been a real bright sjiot as has Stahly and Lown in the bullpen. but the starters just haven t had what it takes. In contrast to last year, the Sox have b«a.> leading the league in team bating m<>st of the year. FOLLOWING, THESE THREE is Washington, another real surpi i ,• team who has been playing real go<»d bail after a slow break. , Then comes tA o disappointments in the Cleveland team and Detroit. Cleveland traded away a jair of leading men and have ' felt it sorely while Detroit has i been in a season long batting ■ slump. ’ Remember, when you are telling people your troubles, half of ' them aren't interested and the ' other half are glad to see you ; are finally getting what's coming to you.
