EDITORIAL Thursday and Friday are to be two big days in the life of C. Hmmet Filer. who is seeking the nomination of the Republican Party for the office of State Superintendent of Public Instmction. He is opposed to date by one person, that being Phillip Willkie, son of the late Wendall Willkie who was the Republican candidate for president in 1940 against Franklin D. Roosevelt. Comparing the two men tt>r this job commonly known as the State Superintendent. Filer has a record of outstanding merits in the field of education since leaving college and pursuing the teaching field. He has served in many capacities over the years, including three years as assistant to Wilbur Young. On the other hand. Willkie is an attorney and a banker. He lays no claim to being connected with education as a teacher, administrator or in any other way. He posted his fee to run for this office les s than two weeks ago. apparently “shopping around” before making up his mind as to which race to enter. Willkie has come out with a very point blank five-point program that under close inspection leaves one scratching his head and wondering just what this Iran is doing seeking this job. He also has verbaly blasted the polic es of schools and colleges, level-ng a very str ongblast at Ball State Teachers College, calling it a “fun school.” On the other hand. Filer has remained rather silent in comparison to his much more famous opponent. Certainly the name Willkie is much more common around the state and beyend all doubt, the man is a politician. Th e question remains, is this the right kind of man to hold this all-important office. Filer knows education. He is presently serving as County Superintendent ft>r St. Joseph County, one of the largest counties in the state. He has had experience on the state level and is a man well respected by school people. Certainly, regardless of the outcome of this race, it should be known that Walkerton is proud of Mr. Eiler and is giving their full-hearted support to him and all the well-wishes fqr a successful campaign ending with the nomination of the Republican Party fcr the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction. ■ ■ DEATH RECORD Mrs. TiJ’ie Francis Ward Mrs. Tillie Francis Ward, 83, North Liberty, died at 7 am.
