PLAN ANNUAL JULY FOURTH PROGRAM
Legion Names Parade Winners And New 3rd District Officers
Winners o? the five trophies plus a cash award, were announced by the Walkerton American Legion Post 189, following the judging of the entries in the parade which started activities for the Annual Third District Convention in Walkerton Saturday and Sunday. A fine crowd lined Roosevelt Road from the American Legion Hall, where the parade assembled, throughout the route to the Walkerton High Schocl, where the proceedings ended. The winners were: Best firing squad, Bremen post: uniformed color guard, Nappanee post; nonuniformed color guard, Pulaski post in South Bend; drum and bugle corps, Maple City Cadets, junior corps of LaPorte; marching unit, Argcs post: high school band, Breme'n. A $lO cash award went to a racing car float sponsored by the New Carlisle post. National Legion judges who officiated were Jack Bohler and Jerry Kessler, both of Warsaw. The rest of the Saturday program included the registration of delegates Prom 1:00 p. m. and a big gala dance at the Legion Hall Saturday night. This along with the parade, was very well attended by members and guests of the 34 posts in the Third District, made up of LaPorte, Marshall, Elkhart and St. Joseph counties. Sunday Program Impressive On Sunday, the convention continued with a very impressive Memorial Service at Place Park in Walkerton. A wreath in memory of the dead was placed at a cross by Alex Niezgodski, of Post 357, South Bend, Third District commander, and Mrs. Howard Strycker, Lakeville, Third District American Legion adjutant. The officiating officer was Harold Lind, from LaPorte’s Hamon Gray post. The invocation and main address were given by the ReV Paul Loucks, pastor of the Koontz Lake Community Church. The Walkerton post firing squad saluted the deceased and the Walkrton color guard posted the colors. The Walkerton High School band furnished the music. Election of Officers Following the Memorial service, the seen® shifted to the Opera Ballroom for the business meeting. Wayne Miller, commander of the Walkerton Post, opened the meeting and welcomed the many delegates and other Lgicnnaires. The meeting was then in the hands of the Third District Officers and the business and election followed. New officers elected at this meeting are: Harry Shilder, Wakarusa. Third District commander; Harold Loetz, Michigan City, vice commander for LaPorte county; Robert Dean. Nappanee, vice commander for Elkhart county; Gabby O'Dell, Argos, vice commander for Marshall county, and Orville Weise. Post 50. South Bend, vice commander for St. Joseph county. Also, Paul Little, Osceola, finance officer: Leo Gotowka, Post 272. South Bend, chaplain: Clem Zielwski, Post 357, South Bend, sergeant-at-arms. POLICE NEWS Several items appear on the Police Blotter this week of various nature. Edward Lenz, 1409A Ohio St., paid a fine and costs totaling $18.75 fcr an arrest oP June 6, when he was guilty of net having a valid drivers license. Ralph Shaffer, 707 Van Buren St., paid a fine of SI.OO in cafeteria court for a parking violation on June 11. Raymond Giardino and Geneva Diedrick .both of LaPorte, were arrested on June 11 for disorderly conduct. They both were fined a total of $17.00 with ccsts after pleading guilty before the Justice of the Peace. Roosevelt Collins, Philadelphia. Pa., was picked up for vagrancy and investigation on June 15. He was held in the local jail until the Indiana State Police had made a check of him, and then released with the order to get out of town'. Bush Wood, route 3, and Alice Quigley, route 1, North Liberty, were invalved in a minor property ^damage accident on June 17. Mrs. Quigley was waiting for a stop sign just off Roosevelt Road when Wood backed from an angle parking plaice on a side street doing less than $50.00 damage to the side* of the Quigley car. No arrest was made. Louis Gunn. 1208 Ohio St., was picked up by the Walkerton Police on June 22, for violation of a Court Restraining Order. He was tuined over to the Sheriffs department and taken to the county jail. George Hershberger, owner of Hershberger’s Store in Walkerton, reported to the police on June 15 that three watches had been taken from his store. They were Timex watches, white gold, and valued from SIO.OO each. An 11 year old boy was found guilty of shoplifting a baseball from Hershbergers on June 21. The merchandise was paid for and the boy was put in custody of his mother. Mrs. Robert Good. Hamlet, was involved in a property damage accident on Indiana Street on June 21. She was driving a pick-up truck when she lost control of it and hit a utility pole. Considerable 'damage was done to the truck, and the pole was pushed over and some wires broken She was arrested for failure to have her vehicle under control . DANCE FRIDAY The Cub Scout parents will be the sponsoring party for the 10c Teen Dance at the Walkerton Youth Building Friday Night. A program of recorded music will be featured and the dance will continue from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. NOTICE The Walkerton Public Library will be closed from July 5 to 16 for vacations. Another new business got off tn a very successful start in Walkerton last week as the Uptown Laundromat, a self-service, coin-operated Laundromat had a very successfuul Grand Opening. Owned and operated by Victor Stockman. oP Plymouth, Indiana, the Laundromat is housed in a new building built especially fcr this business on Michigan Street, three-quarters of a block south of Roosevelt Road. A man well qualified in this business, Stockman has been in the appliance business for 14 years, the last 11 handling Westinghouse equipment. He has another Laundromat similar to the Walkerton one, in operation in Plymouth, at the corner of LaPorte and Center Streets. This has been in operation for a year. He has the new business fully equipped with Westinghouse laundromats. 24 in all, and 8 large 50 lb. dryers. Everything is set up on a coin operated basis and there is lounging aj-ea and refreshment machines to make the time pleasant for the customers. At the Grand Opening, which took place Friday and Saturday of last wdek. over 350 loads cf washings were done free and the entire two-day program was well attended. Two door prizes were awarded at this time, a Puritan Home Water Softener System, won by Mrs. Illinois St.. Walkerton; and a Westinghouse steam and dry iron, won by Mrs. Fred Sheneman, of North Liberty. Lions To “Picnic” Next Tuesday The Walkerton Lion s Club will conclude their meetings until next September Tuesday as they enjoy their annual picnic, thanks to ths generosity of our yearly hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Burch. The picnic is always a highlight of the year for the members and their families. With a great big carry-in dinner on the program, swimming, water skiing and so forth, a good time i s again assured all who attend. The picnic will begin in the afternoon as early birds start to arrive for that little extra enjoyment in the watejr. The supper will be served around 7:00 pm. The Lions club will furnish the meat and drink, but each family should bring a coveted dish and their own table service. Lion John Wathen is program chairman f*' this month and has promised good weather and a good time for all. There will be a very short business meeting following the dinner as a couple of items must come before the members at this time.
The Laundromat will continue in operation 24 hours a day, seven day s a week, with everything complete for the round the clock customers. Stockman also plans to continue his other businesses as he has in the past. “Comet” Drops In Walkerton A Comet dropped in Walkerton Monday afternoon, but didn't raise a great concern of star gazers and so forth. This Comet was of the four-wheeled variety, and it dropped Prom its place on the top of a drive-away semi-trailer. The place was Roosevelt Road, right in the middle of the 600 block. The truck, west bound, driven by Roland D. Dqwell, Detroit, was on its way to Frago, N. D., and carrying a load of this new compact auto made by the Mercury division of the Ford Motor Company. Dowell had stopped for the traffic light in a line of traffic and when he started again, the car made its exit. Dowell was partially unaware of the accident, but recalled seeing one of his cars in the middle of the road in his rear view mirrors. He stopped further down the street and returned to the scene as did many curio is v>w(rs. Arter the necessaxy phene calls with his company and so forth. and reports by the Walkerton and Indiana State Police were made, the auto was again loaded and he was on his way, some two hours late and considerably more unhappy than he had been when he entered town. Considerable damages were done to several parts of the car, including a bent frame. Walkerton Police Says “Thanks” The Walkerton Police Department, headed by chief Adolph Graf, wishes to extend their "Thanks’’ to the various parties responsible for the handling of traffic in Walkerton last Saturday night during the Legion convention. These thanks are particularly offered to the Walkerton Civil Defense Police, who furnished 6 mm: the North Liberty Civil Defense Police, who finished 4 men; the Indiana State Police and the Sheriffs Department. who each furnished 2 men. Along with the Walkerton force, everything was kept under complete control and handled very nicely. NOTICE The Minnetonka 4-H square dance scheduled for Jime 24 has been temporarily postponed.

Balloon Ascension Again To Be Featured Another big July 4th has been planned for Walkerton as the American Legion, Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club again combines their talents in support cf this program. This annual program always is the center of ini' test for thousands of persons from this area a s they visit Walkei on to enjoy the rides, pr< gram and fireworks. After an absence c? two years, the always popular balloon ascension will again highlight the evening activities. This has always been almost as much a part of the program as the fireworks themselves. Prof. Claude Shafer, the same man who has been putting on this thrilling show fcr many years in Walkerton, will again return to make his jump on the Fourth at approximately' 6:30 p.m. The Drago Shows will be in Walkerton and set up ready for business On Wednesday, June 29, and will run through Tuesday, July sth. This includes a complete midway with rides and other sidn attractions. The actual program planned by the participating groups will begin at 12:30 on Monday, the Fcurth Games And stunts will start off the program with & Jr. Leagu e All-Star game booked for the Park Diamond at 2:30 p in. The partiatcipants for this game will be selected by the Junior League coaches and umpires. Following will be the filling of the balloon, a project that always has a lot of interest as the jump preparations are all completed This will begin in the neighborho<Ml of 5:00 pm. The jump itscH* is scheduled for 6:30 (or whenever the big balloon is ready to make the upward trip. I A slow-pitch ball game will follow thi s with members of the Walkerton Slow-pitch league participating. At 8:30. the American Legion Color Guard will perform the flag ceremony and immediately after, the Walkerton High School Band Will present a concert while the many people are getting in place to watch the fireworks. They are scheduled to begin at 9:30, with the Walkerton Fire Department doing tlie necessary work in this project. The refreshment stand will be open Sunday and Monday in the Park for the convenience of all. This is operated by members of participating organizations. For a week end of fun with plenty to do. plan now to "Spend the 4th In Walkerton."
