Fathers’ Day And Its History Father's Dav may be officially 50 years old this year, but tributess to Dad are on ancient tradition. .. Probably the eldest is a clay tablet written by Elmesu. a Babylonian. about 2000 years before Christ. It ii iplores the gods to grant his father good health and enduring days wishes which are echoed in a thousand different ways on this year's affectionate Father s Day greeting cards. On the sentimental side, for example: You do so very much for others, ... In away that really counts. . . . And give ycur time and patience . . In such generous amounts That on special days like this one, . . . When we re wishing things for you, We always wish the very b?st, For notning else would do! And from an affectionate to a light-hearted tribute to the family's “forgotten man" comes tins one from the same publisher: “Happy Father’s Day from your favorite Dish Washer!’’ Several of the "off-beat” type cards depict Dad as he really is: "To Dad who Is always calm, cocl and collected from!’’ And .'To good ol’ Pop, Happy Pauper’s Day!’’ Dad may be King in America (well for on e day, anyway) but in some parts of the world, he could stand a little recognition. On Palau Island in the South Seas, for example, the ruling matriarch can have any male executed if he even disturbs her comtemplation. And near Su matra, Dad has to go live with his wife’s family; children take their mother’s name ,and only daughters inherit property. In India,Dad's in even worse shape. If he goes into debt. Mother can sell him into slavery to pay off his creditors. And in the African Sudan, Mother may return to her parrents after bearing five children, leaving Father to look after the little ones.

Fathers were not always low men on the totem pole, though. Back in Ancient Greece, an annual festival honored Zeus, father of the gods. Zeus was also patron of human fathers, and dutiful sons gav e their dads the traditional gift —a cluster of ripe grapes. Probably the champion father of alll time was Emperor Mulal Ismail of Morocco, who died in 1727 at the age of 81, leaving 548 sons and 310 daughters. He had 300 wives and 700 concubines. The setting apart of a day on which to honor fathers by spectial st^wices in churches and in other ways .originated independentlly in different parts of the country and in different years. Different days were chosen before there came to be a general agreement on the third Sunday in June. The credit for making the first suggestion of a Fathers Day belongs t<j Mrs. John Dodd of Spokane. Wash. The idea came tc her in 1909 as a suitable ti bute to her own father who had successfully reared a family’ of children after Lhe death of their mother. Mrs. Dodd took her plan to a preacher. A resolution was then drawn up and on June 10, 1910 the first known Fother's Day was observed in Spokane, sponsored by the Spokane Ministerial Association and the Y. M. C. A. The first observance of truly national proportions was in 1922 on the third Sunday in June. It has continued on that day ever since. NOTICE Want to have fun?
