MAINSTREET GOSSIP I ——- ■ - — ' The tourist in Los Angeles is impressed by the great distances one has to go to get places. The greater area of the city is scaitcied over territory about 24 miles square. For instance, when you bo .rd a cit y bus to go anyplace like to the broadcast mg studios, you pay your fare according to your destination. We visited three TV studios, and saw Ralph Edwards in “This i s Your Life", Art Lmkletlei in “People Are Funny." ami Lawrence W elk- and his champ.gne music makers. These are interesting experiences but by the time it takes you to get to the studios, and then stand in line for an hour or so, and then have to watch monitors to see what is being televised, it takes much of the glamour out of it. You see, there are three or four big camera outfits between you and the performers, moving all over the stage, back and forth, first on one side, then on the other, so that, direct visability of the performer.^ is not too satisfactory. For instance, you get a much better view of the Lennon Sisters over TV right in your living room than you do in the broad casting studios. So that one such

experience is interesting from the standpoint of seeing the mechanics of putting a program on the air, but then, you have had it. You see a great mass of humanity of the lower level of society, som ■ intelligent and some questionable. all eagerly listening to the speaker. Los Angelos is noted for its many religious cults. You will find there, many strange and unfamiliar names of cults over the doorways of vacant store buildings or old houses, taken over for places of worship. And who is to deny them that right, in this land of freedom of worship and freedom of expression ! Some friends of the Bakers, our traveling companions, took us to Forest Lawn Memorial Pink

Certainly the happiest experience of our visit in Southern California was the party given in honor of Mr. Baker at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Becker. Mr. Becker, a former student at Kendallville High School, had invited some 40 or 50 former Kendallville people to his home to honor their former teacher. Some of them came from distances of 150 to 350 miles. It wa.s mi extra nice occasion for all of us and a great testimony of love and respect they had for Mr. Baker. The occasion wa
