Fire Destroys 100,000 Pine Trees Near Walkerton A fast moving fire moved through the pine forests of Carlyle Leedio-f'arl Gjemre Jr., Tueslay afternoon, destroying approximately 100,00 ft trees on its way. rhe fire, starting from burning around the fields, moved out of control in a very short time, and the Walkerton F’ire Department was I'irst summoned with Koontz. At 1:30 in the afternoon, a grass fire was extinguished behind the Welco Truck Stop. With the weather ideal for fires and the days pretty windy, extreme caution should be used in the spring burning for cleaning purposes. Bob Cripe Wins In Math Contest Robert Cripe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cripe, has been named a winner in the South Bend regional math contest held March 26th at Central High School. These tests are held under the auspices of Indiana University Division ol Adult Education. Bob, a local Senior, wd] c ompete in the state finals Saturday, 'April 30, on the Indiana University campus. It is his fourth, year to win in the regionals and he will be trying for his third medal in te finals. He tied />r 12th place in the regionals Mrs. Bewley, local math teacher, wdl accompany him to Bloomington. Walkerton was well represented by I^irry Hiler and Ted McKesson in first year algebra, but their scores were a little sho't to permit them tn enter the finals. They held ninth and tenth places among twenty-eight fresh men in the regionals. Larry scortai 130 points and Ted 125, but 135 points were required. This represented the upper 21 percent instead of the 35 percent of last I vear.
