NIPSCO Program Cities Expansion And Modernization Northern Indiana Public Service Company will invest $66 million in 1960-1961 in the expansion and modernization of facilities, Dean told stock holders in the utility's annual report released recently. Mitchell said the multi-million dollar construction program is designed to keep ahead of the ever increasing demand h>r gas and electric service in northern Indiana, and to achieve greater efficiency and economy of operation. “It is tangible evidence,' he said, “of our confidence in the continuing growth and prosperity of the territory we serve." The report cited the construction of a new electric generating station in the Burns Harbor area, between Gary and Michigan City as the largest project in the twoyear construction program. Preparatory work on the site, acquired some 30 years ago in anticipation of future industrial and urban development, began last November "It is expected." Mitchell said, "the plant’s initial generating unit will go "on the line" in December 1962, adding 183.000 kilowatts of capacity to our electric system." Other electric projects in the two-year program include the construction of a 138.000 volt substation at Warsaw, ami the build ing of new 138.000 volt steel tower transmission line between Warsaw and Plymouth. In addition, several 34,600 volt transmission lines will be converted to 60,000 volts, while primary distribution will be raised and transformer capacity increased throughout the system to provide greater load carrying capacity. These are all manifestations of the rapid territorial growth we are experiencing, Mitchell said In May. the Midwest Steel Corporation begain construction of a "finishing mill" on its lake front property between Gary and Michigan City, triggering a period of unprecedented expansion in our service area. In addition, the Bethlehem Steel Company has announced it is interested in developing the large parcel of land it purchased in the

Burns Harbor area as soon as feasible. All of this a< tivity means greatter use of gas and electricity, the utility president said, emphasizing the importance of careful planning and long range forcasting to keep ahead of the continuing growth and development taking place here. One of the most ambitious projects in the company's two-year program is construction of trans mission and distribution facilities to bring natural gas to 27 communities in northern Indiana, in which franchises were obtained in 19|59. Among the cities and towns to be served natural gas for the first time are Bourbon, Bristol, Culver, Etna Green,Fowl,er, Francesville, Goodland, Kentland, Kouts, LaGrange, Ligonier, Mentone, Milford Junction, Monon. Monticello, North Judson, North Liberty, Pierceton, Fines. Portage. Remington, Reynoles, Royal Center, Syracuse, Wakarusa, Walkerton, and Wolcott. NIPSCO engineers are currently designing the most effecient transmission and distribution system possible for each community. Plans for 1960 also call for the building of 4*2 miles of 30-inch gas transmission line in the Calumet region and 8 miles of 16inch transmission main between South Bend and Elkhart. National Library Week April 3 - 9 What do you know about your public library?
