Penn Ousts Indians From Tourney 46-42 Tenn High School, the newest and largest member of the St Joseph County High Schools, oust* rd Walkerton from the 1960 County Tourney in an exciting game that found both teams very cold The game was close most of the way with about as wild a second half for no more scoring than was done aa has ever been witnessed. The game opened the action at John Adams gym .but for all praclual purposes, the action opened prior to that when junior forward. Gars’ Shields, fell in the gym and Injured his head. He was rushed tn a hospital where 7 stitches were required to close the wound He did. however, return after the medical attention to play most of the second half, but the injury had a definite bearing on the content. Walkerton to put their center at forward position in older to take up the slack of outside shooting that Shields gives the Indians Hostetter opened the ecoring for the evening with a hard-driv-ng lay-in right through the middle that proved to be his only basket of the night Besinger ti*d the score for Penn, but the Indians came back with Wee throws by Crtpe and Spier to grab th® lead. 4-2 Sorgenfrei hit a jump shot for the Kmgsmen, but free throws proved invaluable as John son hit one to again break the tic Fdgerton hit for Penn and they led 6-5 Cnpe s first basket of the n.ght again forced the game in Walkerton s favor Hoefle and Edgerton m'orrd again and Spier and Johnson added free throws tn keep the Indians within one point Gunn tallies a free throw for the Kmgsmen and the Indians then tied the game as Spier tallied twice from the foul line However, Penn moved ahead to stay until the late minutes of the third quarter as Hoeffte made two consecutive free throws and Gunn a basket before the quarter ended 15-11, Penn Otpe hit first in the second period, but Edgerton came back with a basket Spier was next, but again Penn retaliated on a basket by Hartz. Hartz then added two free throws as he was beginning t<> move from his center spot Both defenses had been pretty tough, but Penn found this opening down the center of the Indians zone with Hartz on the playing end Gripe hit » pair of free throws and Johnson a beautiful hard-dnv-ng lay-in made possible by a good fake aa he spun and shot Hartz again hit and after Cnpe bagged another free throw - . Hartz put <r hts third basket in a short span of time Spier came back wnth a two-pointer, but Hoefle hit a basket and two charity Shota to give Penn a 29-22 lead This was chopped to two points as Cnpe and spier hit baskets and Johnson a ’Yee thrww, but Hartz raw back with a three point play for Penn <'npe added another pair of one pointers and Wisanw hit for Penn •before the half ended to make it 34-29 Scoring at » MwlIV Pace The second half took off very dow from a scoring pace, although Penn missed a constderablc number of easv shots on two occasion* nght at the start of the second half. Cripe finally put the Indians back in the lead with 1:0R remaining in this quarter He added a basket just at the end of the period to give the Indians a 39-36 advantage Penn in the 8 minute stanza. ha<l missed any number of fn* throws as fouls were beginning to l>e a definite factor m this game. The scoring remained very slow as both teams were as cold as could be Grom hit a free throw, after missing four straight, to pull Penn within 2 points Hoefle tied the score wnth a short jump shot after three and a half minutes had elapeed of the final stanza Penn took the lead shortly after as Sorgenfrei hit one of two free throws, this coming at just half way in the quarter Shields hit a short t uniting drive shot at 3:25 and the Indians IM 41-40. It was short-lived however as Hoefle hit twice at 3 OR from the foul line This was the scoring for quite some time as both teams had a number of chances, Penn several from the foul line, but they could not hit any better from that spot than Walkerton from the floor Ar. exception to this w’as Hoefle, as he scored two more free throws at the 43 second mark to give them a 44-41 lead. Niemaslk potted one attempt from the charity Une with 11 seconds left on the clock, but Hartz finished the scoring as the gun sounded as he was fouled and hit one shot for th® 46-42 lead Prmentagr* Ixm Walkerton did come out on tm shooting percentage* as they bag gM 13 shots in 56 attempts for a mark of 232 while Penn s 15 in 6.R tries only gave them a 225 percentage of their shots.
