MAINSTREET GOSSIP v’ With Congress adjourned, we recall what the beloved Will Rogers once said, “Now the country will be Safe for a few months.” But, on second thought, we're not so sure about thxs safety idea. With our foreign visitor from Russia running all oyer the place, pecking into the coiners of our country and the newspapers and TV full to runningover with the events of his visit, maybe anything could happen Os course, we're talking about Krushchev, only We can t spell his name correctly, so we'll let it go at that! Most of the US’ers are running scared over his visit, but we doubt if the old boy picks up any information that will enable him to lick us very soon. No doubt, he would like very much to do that very thing, but if we can convince him that the US is strong and won’t stand for any foolishness from Russia, the visit will have been worth while. We are in a position to do a lot of talking before engaging in a shooting war, and we have the feeling that Mr. K. will have the same idea when he leaves our shores. Hope so! We have the feeling that Mr. K. wants to stir up some extra trade with us, as he is short on that kind of stuff with the western

■ world, and in order to do any trading with us, he will first want some credit. That means he will probably ask for a loan before he can buy our goods. Whether he gets it or not, it will provide the U.S. with some trading amunition in helping us get some concessions from Russia. That seems to be the order in our way of life. If a Congressman wants his bill to get through Congress, he will trade his support for another congressman’s vote, and so both men get what they want. A second thing Mr. K. wants to know more about, is the American “know how” in agriculture. That’s one field where he realizes (and admits) that his country is behind the U. S. He will be particulary interested in what goes on at the lowa farm and will be influenced by what he sees. We hope Mrs. K. has an opportunity to see some American kitchens and talk with some American women from the rank and file of our population. The lowa farm that they visit can hardly be regarded as the ordinary farm home. It probably exceeds most farm homes in grandeur. Mr. K. has the reputation of being highly argumentative, especially in the realms in which he thinks Russia excells and on matters- of form of government. He is likely to be adamant in his views along the line and hardly open to conversion. As Mrs .Roosevelt has said, the thing that makes him hard to deal with is his lack of anything resembling morals and
’ spiritual values. If that be true, ■ and it seems a logical conclusion, I then he will be extremely hard to > deal with on any basis. There isn't i much to bank on. Only world opinion might help enforce any agree1 ment entered into by him and any 1 other people, and the influence of ' world opinion on him might be nil in a world crisis. This exchange of visits is full of 1 opportunities for many interna- ' tional things to happen. It will prove very interesting to watch, if we don't get so overburdened , with reports of his visit. PLAYS IN FFA BAND AT FAIR Two Johnson Township toys played in the state FFA band at the Indiana- State fair on its closing day. Don Tnomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Thomas, has been playing with the band since the organization of the FFA chapter in the Walkerton school.
