TilfS IS SORT OF ONE OF t use in between weeks the pennant races are not to a cin ax. the football season is still a week aw ay from a real salt ami nothing top ranking is hap- } ning at present. Os course the bui Francisco, Los Angeles an 1 M ilv. aukee fans don't feel that a ] 11 is here or probably the ticket department of the Chicago White Sox that is set to handle world series ducats. THE NATIONAL LEAGUE IS going to be somewhat more settled this week unless a freakish, turn of events pops up. The Milwaukee Braves will have completed a two game series with ti e Dodgers by the time of this reading but move to San Francisco for another - big two game series. A lea^t one of these thiee teams will probably fall far enough back that they will not have mu h hope of passing two teams with just a few short games left. THIS IS THE TIME ONE OF the teams playing the rest of the season in the spoilers role can do the harm. However with the race being about settled in the American league, it is doubtful that a drastic thing like Cleveland’s rebounding enough to catch the Sox could happen. The National Icop has a different situation. Any of (the teams that still does battl> against the top three can respond to the title of spoiler any time they win. One thing usua’ly ta ken for granted is that no manager will be r unning in the players just recalled when baffling a pennant contender. BROWSING ABOUND A LlTtle we see footballs flying in the air all about the country side as the kids are getting right in the swing of things and throwing the oid pigskin around as the college ami pro season is once again upon vs Walkerton and North Liberty have both now opened their junior high season and in another week, the major colleges will be in full swing as well as the pros. Th<> pros have already had several games on TV which has been one oi the real makings of the pro league. Sunday's game was typica' of how the pros play the game an ! just how fast a game can take an about face. j IN TALKING FOOTBALL AND' ba ebal] together, it is noted that ho h are talking a new league. Tre Continental baseball league has Imd its start as far as planning g "s with several cities all ready lined up and several more wanting tin remaining spots. An old baseball man with plenty of savvy is president. Branch Rickey, and the pi sent plans call for iteams to a ually begin play on a full time op ration by 1961. The pro footbaj league is also trying to get so’ up for action in the near futwe Os the two. the new foot-! bail league stands by far the best dr nee of survival. This observai

icn is strictly yours truly, but a lot of difference is noted in the two sports when it come . t > a step like these two groups are attempting. NO DOUBT IS GIVEN TO THE fact that the fans In the new cities are ready for t hese new teams, but the talent and caliber of play is what makes one wonder just a bit. There are thousands upon thousands of boys and young men p’aying baseball now, but the shortage of what must be considered major league talent is the problem at ■ immediate hand. The present sei- j up has the sixteen major' league clubs with a pretty tight; grip on the talent that is available. Most of the minor league! ball players are under one of the' present major league teams wings. IT HAS BEEN HSTIMATED A player needs at least 5 years of training to be a good major leagu- [ er, many of course making it in' less time, but that is a standard, for working your way up. That will leave one. of two things, a' team will either by playing the; type of ball of the higher (not the' highest) minor leagues, or they’ will have to push back the 19611 date a little. Another item of in-,' terest, what is the fate of the j niinor leagues, they of course being! very important as a proving and , training ground for young ball players. IN FOOTBALL, THE PICTURE । is much brighter on the talent side., Each year many young men ar? I coming out of the college ranks j that can make their way in thei professional ranks. The 12 proses-l sional teams now can’t begin to even use their draft choices, that are selected with many turning to the Canadian league and many otheis just ending their football career right then and there. Talent doesn’t present nearly the worry in football that it does in baseball. Many still feel, and probably rightly so, that expansion of the! present major leagues is the solution with football probably being able to take care of the new proposals for the new league. MOVIE > REVIEWS i From THE RIALTO | I Batten down the laugh hatches, I fans! Jerry Lewis's new hurricane of hilarity. Paramount’s “Don’t I Give Up The Ship,’’ will be launched in town Sunday on the screen j of the RIALTO Theatre, with co-stars Dina Merrill, Diana Spen- j cer, Mickey Shaughnessy, Robertl Middleton, and Gale Gordon, Ma-' bel Albertson, and Chuck Wassl 1 aboard. 1 ! Not since “At War With the I Army" has any branch of the military service seen such hilarity-pro-J W-

Bat, of course, when the lieutenant b-.r---pens to be Jerry Lewis ,h's brid should have prepared herself fonot exactly smooth sailing. It seems that the U.S.S F - ’ blatt, World Wat II destroyer, nowhere to he found, amt that ar John Paul Stodder VII {Jjrry) was the last man to sign for it. Therefore, he might presumably b > expected to know something of its whereabouts. A Congressional com-; mittee refuses to grunt the Navy an additional appropriation until the missing destroyer is located—; and also not until then is Jerry permitted to launc h his mat riage. As any Jerry Lewis fan can [ imagine, such an original and ' funny idea must give the corne lian plenty of opportunity to stir up gales of laughter as he sets out to ifind the ‘‘lost.” destroyer, and on । I the double, before his pretty bride's waning ardor winds up in permanent deep-freeze. [ Junior World Series Now Under Way j The Walkerton Junior League [Baseball World Series is now under way. The season’s schedule was । halved with the winners of the first half to play the winners of the second half i n a two out of three series. The Koontz Lake Senators easily won the first half of the season having a 5-1 record. The second half was much closer with a play-off between the Orioles and Tigers necessary to decide the [winner. The Teegarden Tigers downed the Orioles in a close game 8-6. So, in the Walkerton World [Series, the two out-of-town teams, ' one from Koontz Lake and the other from Teegarden. will be playing to decide who is the champion. । The first game was played last l Monday with the Senators defeat- , ing the Tigers in a good game 5-3. ■ Wednesday will see the second I game and should the Tigers win j this one, the play-off will be this 'Saturday evening. The public is j invited to come out and see these । two fine teams play. [ All junior league ball players are
