Driver Fatigue Responsible For Gas Truck Crash Driver fatigue caused a fiery accident in which the driver of a gasoline-loaded tractor semi-trail-er died after his vehicle rammed a parked# car and a building in Charlotte, N. C., the Interstate Commerce Commission reported i after an investigation. The vehicle, operated by Associated Petroleum Carriers of Spartanburg, S. C.. was carrying 5,600 gallons of gasoline from Thrift, : N. C., to Pageland, S. C., when it । struck the illegally parked and unoccupied passenger car on January 3. 1959. The investigation report was issued by Commissioner Rupert L. Murphy. It stated that the driver, with 25 years of experience, had
driven 190 miles while on duty with no opportunity for appreciable rest prior to the fatal mishap. ICCs investigation determined that the gasoline-carrying vehi le had proceeded from a traffic light intersection to the passenger car parked at the curb instead of following the course of two clear traffic lanes. Rammed by the petroleum vehicle .the passenger car was shoved 96 feet until both vehicles collided with a brick building. Flames fed by the gasoline cargo engulfed th • tractor semi-trailer and building. Property damage was estimated at $48,400. The investigation determine 1 that the illegally parked auto wa an element in the accident. "How. ever,’" the report said, "the failure <>f the driver of the gasoline-laden vehicle to follow the course, of the two clear traffic lanes or to observe the parked vehicle, establishes primary responsibility to be in th? operation of the carrier's vehicle. ' Violations of ICCs motor carrier safety regulations were found to include those pertaining to driving while ill or fatigued, exceeding maximum driving time and th r - quirement that drivers maintain a daily log. "This accident, me official report stated, "emphasizes the vital : mportance of compliance with our safety regulations by all carriers, +hose transnorting flammable liquids and other dangerous
