I This is a problem which has 'been bothering farm safety ex-| perts for some time. A report from the National Safe-’ ty Council shows that each year more fatal tractor accidents occur in the 10-14 age group than , any other age category I “This seems to point up the fact that young people who don’t t know how to handle tractors are [ being allowed to operate them,’’ ■ says F. R. Willsey, farm safety 'specialist at Purdue University. “If it is absolutely necessary for a youth to drive a tractor, he should be thoroughly trained in all phases of tractor safety before jhe takes over the wheel,” Willsey I warns. : “A teenager —or anyone who op

Tractors are made for one peri son to operate -no more. But 'often, someone hitches a ride. And that can lead to tragedy. Willsey says the majority of children in the 4-9 year-o’.d group killed in tractor accidents last year was riding a tractor. Not operating one.—just along for the ride. A farmer recently said, ‘‘l would rather hear a child cry because he was refused a tractor ride, than to hear him cry because he got hurt riding one.” In general, accidents with farm machinery are decreasing, the National Safety Council reports, but tractor accidents are on the upswing. i
