Toll Road” Approves Budget INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana Toll Road Commission today approved a preliminary 1(458 operations budget after department heads had suggested reduetions totaling $47,900. The budget after pruning totaled $3,594,786. The 1957 budge* by comparison totaled $2,640,749. largest increases in the new budget were for the maintenance and toll collection departments. In addition ,a larger percent of the toll road commission’s 1958 expenditures were chargeable to operations and loss to construction than m 1957. Operational costs are paid out of current revenues on the Northern Indiana Toll Road while construction costs are paid out of funds borrowed from investors who purchased toll road bonds. The proportion of costs chargeable to operations increases as completion of the road, including final settle ments with all contractors, draws nearer. Commission Chairman John A K. ndall announced that at the next * commission meeting spokesmen for j the trustee banka representing the toll road bondholders will be in- । vited to air their views on the proposed budget i "We have until December 31 to effect final approval of the budFOX IjiPorte. get :ind each commissioner is go ing to give it the closest scrutiny prior to that time. Any changes necessary can be made up to that time.” Chairman Kendall explained. Kendall pointed ou* that today's adoption of the preliminary bud get was done simply to fulfill a ieqmremcnt of the trust agreement governing operation of the toll road The trust agrcrmcnt sets October ID as the deadline tor approval of the preliminary budget figures. i The commission desires all the information necessary to arrive at an adequate, yet realistic budget. The commissioners today examined the budget item-by-item in conference with its administrative department heads and representatives of the J. E. Greiner Co. of Baltimore, Md. .engineering consultants on the project. Tn other action the commission- ' era: 1 Voted to receive new bide for the lease of R 8 automobiles, including 49 state police patrol cars, oj»eratod by the commission. The commission said it will decide after receiving new bids whether or not to cancel its present contract with Transportation Lease Corporation of Evansville. Commission Secreary-Treasurer Lawrence F Cosbie said he understood that some car rental agencies would be willing to lease on the basis of a monthly rental fee with<*it an additional mileage charge now made by Transportation I^ase Corporation. This might result in a substantial savings to the commission, 2. Received from J. E. Greiner
