Makes Recital Debut W MISS BETTY BARNEY

1 A large and appreciative audi-■ ('lire of musicians and music lov- | ers from Notre Dame, South Bend (and Walkerton, enjoyed the skilled performance of Miss Betty, Barney last Sunday when she) gave her violin recital at the Con-' servatory in South Bend. Miss Barney, a pupil of Prof. 1 Frederic Ingersoll, was assisted by Miss Elinor Raymond, of | South Bend. Their co-ordinated I performance of the serene and intricate first movement of the Beethoven Concerto, as first one and then the other wove in the melody, was the high light of the, I program. ■ With accurate intelligent playing I

■ Notre Dame Opens Home Season Sat. I Having made a good start by , knocking off a strong Illinois team, 26-6, at Champaign, the Fighting ; Irish of Notre Dame return to j their home stadium Saturday to 'entertain the I'niversity of Pitts- | buigh Panthers. ' This is the 15th game of the ■ Pitt-Notre Dame series which 'started back in 1909 when the Irish won 6-4. Going into Saturday’s tussle, Notre Dame has eight victories against five losses ami a tie. Last season, the Irish finished on top, 39-9. | It is Leahy’s opinion very few changes, if any, will be made in the starting lineup against the Panthers. He still hesitates to make a first string choice at cen-1 ter between George Strobmeyer,, McAllen, Tex and Marty Wendell, Chicago. In all probability, th** liish coach will use both men on defense, substituting one or the other at guard. This means i Notr * Dame will again use three men backing up the line, a system which proved very effective against ' I Illinois. Other possible last min--1 ute shifts include John Mastran- | gelo, Vandergrift, Pa., at right ’guard, and Terry Brennan, Mi!- ' waukee, Wise., at left half. ' Gemge Sullivan , right tackle, (from E. Walpole, .Mass., was the j only serious casualty of Satur- | day’s fracus against Illinois, suffer- • ing a recurrence of a ligament inj jury in his left leg. i that testified to Miss Barney’s keen ■ ear and keen mind, she maintained a sweet, rich tone even in the swiftest passages of the unaccom- । panied Bach Partita in E Major. 1 The two remaining numbers ; were in lighter vein, the Intru- , duction ami Rondo by Saint-Saens and the Hora Staccato by DinicieHeifety. I Miss Barney received many comI pliments on her performance, and an invitation to repeat the recital at Notre Dame, which she had to decline because of a lack of time. She left Wednesday evening for , Washington, D. C., where she will i play first violin in the National 1 Symphony for the coming season.

that Sullivan may not be able to perform against the Panthers. Bob Livingstone, first string left half, came out of the game with a Charley horse but is expected to be ready. The Panthers, beaten by Illinois in their first game, will come to Notre Dame fresh from a 33-7 triumph . over West Virginia. M. Robert Cahill, ticket manager at Notre Dame, this week warn ed all followers of the Irish that if they had not already secured seats for other home games the Pittburgh contest would be the Only chance to see the team this season. All other games are sold । 'out. Cahill also believed there was a strong possibility of a sell out for the Pitt contest. EXPAND PROGRAM , The National Farm and Home . Hour, featuring U. S.
