Horse Pasture Plateau was so named by the Indians who drove their stock to this Inaccessible, easily defended point to protect it during intertribal warfare, and later by Morman settlers in southern Utah who used It as a summer grazing ground.
Irish Retire Ancient Bell Used in the pork market, on h church, and then as a fire alarm, an ancient bell has been honorably “re tired” in the Urban council rooms of Dungannon. Irish Free State. City employees removed it from a pole near the R. U. C. barracks, where it had done duty for many years as a fire alarm. For almost a century the bell was used In the pork market, then in Market Square, and when the parish church was being rebuilt in 1868 ’69 it summoned the congregation to worship in the primitive Wesleyan preaching house, which was lent for two years to the Church of Ireland authorities. “Telling the Bees’* The expression, “Telling the bees’’ is an old English custom, and exists in sections of widely separated areas such as Sussex and Yorkshire. The supposition is that when a member of the family dies the bees must he informed immediately or they will leave the place and seek another spot to make their hive. “Land of the Humming Bird” Trinidad, “Land of the Humming Bird,” is the most southern of the British West Indies group. Here the East Indian Hindus, comprising one-third of the population, retain the characteristics of their mother country. The native colored population observes the customs and habits of earlier days. Dry Ice, Flaked Ice Dry ice is carbon dioxide (the gas that puts the fizz in soda water) cooled until it has solidified. Under ordinary pressures it vaporizes without melting. Flaked ice is ordinary ice that has been prepared by freezing a film of water on a rotating drum and then scraping it off. Huge Industry Without Machines American people who admire Holland’s tulips seldom realize the amount of work tlte bulbs require. In this, । one of Holland's great trade develop- ' ments. about 100.000 tulips are planted ■ to the acre, and each bulb must be set and later dug by hand. A Tail-Piece The harvest mouse is the only member of the mouse family that can grasp things with its tail in the same way as the monkey does. This kind of tail is called “prehensile.” The harvest । mouse is the one that makes nests among the cornstalks. Pharaohs Used Paint Science has learned that the paint used in the tombs of the pharoahs was of virtually the same composition as the paint of today and that is was In those early days commonly employed to preserve materials as well as to decorate. Proper Number for Dinner The saying about the proper number for a dinner, according to an old proverb, is not fewer than three nor more than nine. Put differently, not fewer than the graces, nor more than the muses.
