" . ‘‘POWERS OF INTEREST f^Tlie story recently was told of a irTfew idea in religions philanthropy. = In the corner-stone of a new church H in a Western town, one of the trusB tees of the organization placed a a savings certificate of deposit. The § amount of the -deposit and interest | rate were not'made p&biic. | It is interesting .to note what this | certificate will do for the future of = that church organization. It is B within the bounds of reason to as- | sume that the certificate of deposit = will provide at least the major part I of the cost of erecting a new church g.when the one now being built shall | have out lived its days of useful- | ness. i A good way of visualizing a les- | son in thrift is to make calculations = regarding the future value of that | savings bank certificate. |j Even if the amount is only SI,OOO j and it carries 4% interest com- ®! pounded semi-annually, will very [lnearly double Itself within I 5 years 11 for its value at the end of that a I period will be $1,811.36. Dy the | end of 20 years, it will have ing creased more than 2.2 times. the | amount being $2,208.0-4. § Let us assume, however, that the I certificate at the time of its deposit | represented a cash deposit of $2 6, s 000. If it is allowed to remain in 0 the box for 15 years, drawing inter- | est at 4% compounded semi-an- | nually, it would amount to exactly § $4'5,284., while at th« end of 20 r years It will have reached the sum i of $55,201. I' But it may be considered not be- ■ yond reason that the church would g! stand for 50 years. In that case i if the amount of the certificate of | -deposit had been $25,000, it would | at the end of the 50-year period I~ have a value 0f5181,117.50. These figures are eloquent In their tribute to the power of compound interest.
