By this shall all men { know that ve are my disciples, if ye 'i have love one to another.—— Johm 1 16:34, 35. ’,THE FIRST NATIONAL THA‘SKS—- | * GIVING. ” The genius of George Washington | had much to do with shaping this country in a permanently Buccess= | ful form. It would be well therefore, | when we approach a national holiday like Thanksgiving, to think what he felt this occasion should | mean to the people of this coun- - try. He made these points in his first proeclamation as president of a | Thanksgiving day: ! I.—That we should all render| thanks to God for his care and protection. Considering the perils fmm} - which our country has been saved. ~ the same obligations is stsl more in- - gistent now. ; . * 2.—That we Should be grateful x't'm‘ tranquility, union, and gplenty. ! No nation on earth has had so much -of these three blessings as we have. | 3.-—That we should be grateful ‘, for the American constitution. Con- - sidering that this constitution mndn| this government a success where all | previous demoecratic mstitmions! failed, we have great leason for | gratitude on this point. l 4 —Thankfulness for civil and relizious liberty. There is no cnuntry| in the world that has so much lihor—; -ty as we have, except in those coun- ' { tries where there is liberty because there is no strong or well organized | zovernment. We do not care for lib- } erty 1o that oxtont, '; | Washington was not satisfied - merely with any general feeling ot ~ gratitude as a heliday ©bservance. ~ He also called on the people to pray, ' to God for the pardon of their ~ transgressions, for help in perform- { ing their duties, for the continuance -of the government through ‘‘wise ~ just, and constitutional laws.” for i knowledge, religion and virtue, and 3 the increase of science, and such a i dagree of temporal prosperity as } God may think best. These are noble ideals, and we could well { think these thoughts on our Thanks- - giving. | \ 1 | e ——e—— | | COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION | WORK ; | Modern community development 1 makes considerable demands upon ~ the people for active attention to public matters. At the same time the facilitias for carrying on such action have amazingly increased. The telephone is one thing that has done a lot to promote development. It sometimes seems marvellous what the old timers were able to accomplish without this facility. They had good organizations. they h.ad churches ‘and fraternal and social and improvement socities. They had t_hoix- lectures and fairs and entertainments and did a lot of good work. | flm]l’.fixit“‘th.}\r; .tv}nrke-d under great dis--8. 1¢ head of a committee wanted to communicate with “

3 !tho members of that committee, he | {had either to address letters or | " postal cards to those members, or he had to go around and see them individually. That took a great deal of time. | | "Boday if a committee head wishes to assemble his workers, he simmply 4its down to the telephone and talks ,with them, or in many cases he has a secretary or helper do it for him. "In that way the work of organizing the labors of that committee is very greatly reduced. The automobile aiso helps amazingly. If a community does not accomplish social progress now, the trouble is in {tself rather than in the difficulties in the way. The practical obstacle is that the wvarious people ‘hawe so many things on hand that they rwant to do, shat often vou can't ’get them to give attention to comi munity efforts and organization 'wm‘k. But there are many towns where people are publie spirited enough to give that attention, and aided bv modern facilities like the telephone and automobile, they can accowmplish remarkable progress. { e—- — Punchettes--An optimist is a man who marries a woman with ten children. !
