Miss Blanche Newcomer has gone to Indianapolis for a two weeks’ short course in Home Economics. She was sent by the.Tyner club. Mrs. Martha Brayman. who has been living with Mrs. Sarah Atwood, returned to her home in Berrein Springs, Mich., for a week’s stay. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. LaFeber were in Chicago last week visiting at the home of Mrs. Mollie Nichols at the time of the death of her son. Arth- / Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Groshans of Aurora, 111., arrived Monday to spend a few days with the former’s mother, Mrs. Sarah Groshans, and family. Cl^s. Poole of Kingman, Ind., writes, “Put me down for another year of the Independent. It is like getting a letter from home.” Thanks Mr. Poole. E. L. Snethen writes from Evansville—“ The Independent has been coming regularly and I do not want to miss a number.” Os course, he sent us a check. Mr. and Mrs. O. Daniel and sons, H. Smalley and family of Chicago. Mr and Mrs. S. N. Compton of Hamlet. spent Sunday with Mrs. Jennie Burger and family. Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Yerrick and Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Dupler witnessed the final review of the summer term cadets on the academy campus last Sunday, afternoon at Culver. Mr* and Mrs. Roy Miller and sons, Clyde and Gale, returned to their home at Downers Grove. 111., after spending several days at the home of Bert Masterman. Mrs. Miller was formerly Miss Cara Mertz. There is an over abundance of school teachers applying for positions in Indiana at the present time, according to records being kept by the state board of public instruction.
Mr. an,d Mrs. Peter Philips and daughter, Dorothy, returned to their home in Flint, Mich., after visiting several days at the homes of Bert Masterman and Janies Duncan. Mrs. Philips is a sister of Mrs. Masternian. Miss Edna Anderson returned from Bloomington, Ind., where she has been taking summer work in the State University, she expects to return to school in September for her senior year and graduate next spring with the A. B. degree. Kate Douglas Wiggin, author of “The Bird’s Christmas Carrol” and other stories, died in a private hospital, at Sarrow, England, Thursday, August 23. She had been ill several months following an operation. Mr .and Mrs. Harry Parker and E. S. Nichols attended the funeral of Arthur Nichols in Chicago last Friday. Mrs. Arthur Nichols returned with the Parkers on Friday, remaining here until Sunday evening when she returned to Chicago. Misses Doris and Julia Wolf and Irene Ladders and Leonard Wolf of Hammond. Misses Audrey, Lucile and Dorothy Brown, Ray and Lowell Brown and Harold Beuchtel of Goshen, and Miss Mildred Balsbaugh of Walkerton spent Sunday with Ethel, Doris and Russell Bierley. Goodrich, Walkerton wntf Ten South Bend special constables were appointed by the county commissioners at the regular meeting Monday morning. The petition for the appointment of the constables who will serve without pay was filed by the National Horse Thief Detective association, of Indi-, ana and set out that its members, if appointed, would assist police officers in law enforcement. Victor Bagbanes, Chicago, and Joseph Markus. Evanston, 111., who were arrested in Walkerton with a truck containing 20 barrels of beer ast Wednesday night, pleaded guilty in South Bend city court and wert bound over to the St. Joseph county grand jury. No trace of the Hudson coach which the truck was said to be following had been found last night. When arrested, the pair maintained I their ignorance of the nature of the I cargo or the destination of the pilot ' car they said they were following.

Mr. and Mrs Ray Wiseman and sons and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Lan- : caster and sons visited Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Reasor Sunday. Mrs. R. G. Turrell visited several days with her daughter, Mrs. Jean Nelson, of North Liberty. Mr. and Mrs. Abe Bressler of South Bend called on Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Turrell Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schrader and Mr. and Mrs. Wade Hummer called on their mother, Mrs. John Hummer, [.Sunday afternoon. Foster Logan spent Sunday with Elmer Hummer. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schafer entertained the following at dinner Sunday, Ernest Schrader and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Kramer and Isons, Schuyler Ackerman and family, [Carl Schafer of South Bend, Mrs. Edna Miner and daughter of Washington. D. C., Elton Schafer and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Holerman and family of this place. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Baughman entertained the Tried and True class at their home Saturday evening. .Music and songs were the diversions of the evening, Mrs. Albert Wagner favored with a solo and Mrs. Leroy Frick and Bernice Hummer played instrumental pieces. Light refreshments were served at the close of the evening. Elmer Hummer will entertain the Ever Faithful class at his home next Saturday evening. Robbers blew the post office safe at Lapaz, las* Thursday night and obtained about S7O in money and about $5 worth of stamps. The post office is located in the Hildebrand & Holland hardware store. Mr. Holland being the post master. The thugs took a revolver and a watch from the hardware cases.
