NATION'S GRIME BILL ENORMOUS Estimates That Annual Loss to Country Is $3,000,000,000. STOCK FRAUDS BIGGEST ITEM Summed Up, It May Be Said That th* Cost of Wrongdoing, to Each Citizen, Amounts to S3O Annually. New York.—The national crime bill fs more than $3,000,000,000 a year, according to estimates by the custom house, the police, credl-t associations and other authorities made public by the National Surety company. The greatest single item is stock frauds, the annual loss from which is estimated at sl,oo^*, by Sey wur L. Cromwell president of the Ney York stock exchange. Fraudulent bankruptcies were estimated by Secretary’ Tregoe of the National Association of Credit Men to inflict losses of $400,000,000 on the Investing and speculating public. According to these figures, every man, woman and child In the United States is robbed or cheated out of aboht S3O a year; or putting it another way, enough crime is committed in the United States to earn an income of S3O a head to every American. Crime Never So Prevalent. There has never been a time in the history of this country or of the world, Yhen crime has been so prevalent, according to Chairman William B. Joyce of the board of directors of the National Surety company. He pointed out that the $3,000,000 lost through crime was a larger sum by $500,000,000 than the total of the country’s annual fmports. The present year promises to lead all foregoing years in losses by burglary. The following, according to Chair man Joyce, are the seven principal ecdiJomic causes for financial crime: **l. MMdespread disrespect for property sights and law caused partly by the World war. •'2. Envy, resentment apd - bitterness, caused partly by ostentation of the Wealthy class, and also by a widespread belief that opportunities for wealth are unequally allotted. Irfsufficrent Salaries Blamed. “3. Many -salaries too close to the starvation line. «^4. Unemployment. ' "5. Carelessness of employers In not Investigating the past records of new employees, in not auditing the accounts of their business with sufficient frequency and thoroughness and not keeping their office funds in properly constructed, modern safes, etc. “6. Doctrines of anarchy and Bolshevism and misinterpretation of book knowledge. “7. Desire for luxury beyond earning capacities." Are You Having A Public Sale This Fall?
