Women. Men are just little boys grown up, say the philosophers. The boy stubs his toe, runs to his mother, cries a moment, gets a pat on the head and a cookie and then returns to play again. It would be a much darker world these days for the men who are out of work. If it were not for the wives, mothers and sisters who encourage them, keep the flame of hope alive in their hearts and send them forth anew on the quest of prosperity. Woman is the shining light of the world, the source of all inspiration and the generator of cheerfulness.—Exchange. Candy Tasted Alike. “Mother,” little Charles said seriously, after he had looked over all his toys Christmas morning and had sampled the candy that Santa Claus had left in the little cheesecloth sack, banging from the tree, “this candy that Santa Claus left me tastes just like that candy dad brought home the other day 1” One swallow doesn’t make a spring, nor one bottle of hair tonic a football player. Poets pipe the lay and plumbers lay the pipe.

IMPROVED UNIFORM INTERNATIONAL Sunday School ’ Lesson ’ (.By Ri. >. r. to. D. D., Teacher of English Bible In the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago.) Copyright, 1922. Western Newspaper Union. LESSON FOR FEBRUARY 26 ELISHA’S HEAVENLY DEFENDERS LESSON TEXT—II Kings 6:8-23. GOLDEN TEXT—The angel of the Lord encanipeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them.—l’s. 34:7. REFERENCE MATERIAL—Dan. 6:1-23; Heb. 1:14; 11:27. PRIMARY TOPIC—God Takes Care of Elisha. JUNIOR TOPIC —Elisha and the Armies of Jehovah. INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOPIC —Our Unseen Defenders. YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPIC —What Faith in the Unseen Can Do for Us. 1. The Syrian King Sorely Troubled (vv. 8-12). 1. The King’s plan. (v. 8). His method was a kind of guerrilla warfare —armed bands made incursions into the enemy’s territory. He determined as to where camps should be located so as to intercept Israel’s army. His plan was clever, but his great mistake was that he left God out of his calculations. There is one place where all plans and movements are known (Heb. 4:13). 2. The enemy’s movements disclosed (v. 9). The man of God, knowing the enemy's movements, was able to tell the king about them. Elisha’s advice was more than a match for the wily plans of the shrewd Benhadad. Israel’s safety lay more in the man of God than in their warriors. 3. The king of Israel heeded Elisha’s word (v. 10). This was true wisdom. By obeying the prophet’s words he saved himself and army many times. Those who are truly wise heed the divine warnings. Great blessings would come to men if they would heed the warnings of Scripture. 4. The Syrian king’s perplexity (vv. 11, 12). In his perplexity he assembled his servants and demanded that the traitor be made known. He believed that some were playing Into the hands of Te enemy; therefore he would put an end to the treachery. This was denied, and one of his servants declared that the king's movements were reported by Elisha the prophet, even telling to the king of Israel what Ben-hadad spake in his bedchamber. Ben-hadad was worried not because of his sins, but because his plans miscarried. 11. The Syrian King Tries to Trap Elisha (vv. 13-18). 1. He sent an army to capture him (vv. 13, 14). Upon learning that Elisha was making known his actions. he determined to put an end to the matter by trapping him and making him a prisoner. How foolish to put human cunning against divine wisdom. Horses and chariots are useless when God Is against us. God’s purposes cannot be thwarted. If God be for us. who can be against us? 2. Elisha’s servant frightened (v. 15). When he awoke one morning he saw that an armed host was encamping about the city. Viewed from the human standpoint, we do not wonder that he was affrighted. 3. Elisha's encouragement (v. 16). He assured his servant that, though they were surrounded by the Syrian army, there was a mightier host of heavenly defenders round about them. Elisha did not shut his eyes to the real danger, but looked to the helpers of God watching about them. 4. Elisha's prayer (v. 17). He asked that the Lord would open the eyes of ids servant so as to see spiritual things. When the Lord opened the eyes of the young man he saw that “the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.” Round about us all the while are angels guarding us from danger. The reason we do not see them is that we lack spiritual sight. Christ our Defender is nearer than hands and feet. Let us trust Him. True religion is a belief in the supernatural. Lord, open our eyes! The Holy Spirit is a reality and is ever with us. 5. The Syrians smitten with blindness (v. 18). The same God who opened the eyes of the young man, blinded the eyes of the Syrians. God deals with men according to their moral attitude. When men will not have the light, God sends darkness. 111. The Syrian Army Trapped (vv. 19-23). The would-be trappers are now trapped. 1. Army led by the man sought by them (vv. 19, 20). Elisha led them to Samaria and asked the Lord to open their eyes. When their eyes were opeii they saw the man whom they sought, but not at the place where they sought him. Instead of seeing him at Dothan as they expected, they saw him in Samaria. 2. The generous treatment of the Syrians (vv. 21-23). The king of Israel wanted to smite the captives, but Elisha forbade him and ordered instead that they should be fed and sent back to their master. 3. Peace between the nations (v. 23). The mercy shown to the Syrians had such a profound effect upon them that they came no more to make war upon Israel. What a fine thing if we could have such humanity shown today ! . The Harvest of the Earth. And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud. Thrust in thy sickle, and reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.—• Revelation 14:14,15. Infinite Protection. When thou passest through the waters, I will lie with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the lire thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flames kindle upon thee.— Isaiah 43:2.
WORLD COURT OF JUSTICEOPENED Corner Stone Body of the League of Nations Assembles in Holland. MEETS IN THE PEACE PALACE The Hague Scene of a Notable Gathering—Hailed As New Milestone in Evolutionary Progress by Pacifist Adherents. The Hague, Feb. 17. —The peace palace—which cynics during the war labeled “closed, owing to bankruptcy” —was the scene of the inaugural session of the permanent court of international justice, the corner stone of the League of Nations. The event was hailed by adherents of pacifist ideals as a uew^ mi|Qj^ne in the evolutionary proto' ^Btot y world toward peace—or, y of l.ord Curzon, “the lk ( a new era of peace and c ^ong nations.” At the o Tssion the judges were to tai yh to fulfill their offices “hon faithfully, impartially and • . .-entiously.” In their future sittings they are expected not only to clear up such doubtful points of international law as may come Before them, but also to create laws whenever their need is apparent, like the praetors of ancient Rome. The first meeting was held in the great hall of justice, a chapel-like chamber, the carved oaken walls of which have not yet assumed the dark tints of age, but the appointments of which combine to give the appropriate atmosphere of judicial solemnity. Members of the court represent 12 nationalities and the eastern and western worlds. The judges, in accordance with the law’creating the court, possess “the qualifications required in their respective countries for appointment of the highest judicial offices.” The representative of the United States is John Basset Moore, and the others present in The Hague for the meeting are: The president, or chief justice. Bernard Cornelius Johannes Lorder, Holland; Dr. Raffael Aliamira Crevea. Spain; Commendatore Dionisio Anzilotti. Italy; Viscount Robert Finlay, Great Britain; Dr. Max Huber. Switzerland; Dldrick Nyholm. Denmark; Dr. Yorozu Oda. Japan, and Dr. Andre Weiss, France. Tlbe other two judges. Dr. Ruy Barbosa of Brazil and Dr. Antonio S. de Bustamente of Cuba, were unable to come to The Hague. Three of the deputy judges are here: F. V. N. Beichmann of Norway, Demetriu Negulesco of Roumania and Mlchallo Yovanovitch of Jugoslavia. Dr. Wang Chung-Hui of China being absent. At the time of their election some comment was evoked by the absence of a reprewyitatlve of Mohammedan law, but Judge Nyholm of Denmark served oi. the international mixed tribunal in Carlo since 1896 and is held to be an authority on the subject. The judges and deputy judges have at their disposal two panels of technical assessocs to advise them on points arising in labor and transit questions. There are no Americans on either panel. The labor panel comprises two assessors nominated by each member of lite League of Nations and one employees' and one workers' representative from each member country, chosen by the league’s labor office. The transit ami communication panel is composed of two nominees of each member state. A recapitulation of the lists of nominees shows that on the transit and communication panel there are two representatives each of Latvia, Chile, Denmark, India, Bulgaria. Czechoslovakia, China, Italy. Great Britain, Uruguay, France, Belgium, Sweden, Roumania. Greece, Austria. Norway, Finland and Poland, and one each of Haiti and Holland. The labor panel includes one or more representatives from each of these states excepting France and Greece, and with addition of appointees from Colombia and those delegated by the labor office from various countries. NO STIMULANT ABOUT THAT Fainting Man Not Unnaturally Objected to Poor Imitation of the Potent Spirit. Observing a poorly dressed man stagger ami fall prostrate on the sidewalk, a passing physician hurried to his side and began to feel for his pulse. Apparently the man was unconscious and the physician was about to draw his hypodermic syringe from his medicine bag when a workman with a dinner pail in his hand stepped forward from the group ot surrounding spectators. “Here, give him some of this!” he said, exhibiting a whisky flask in his hand. Grabbing this the physician poured part of its contents into the victim s throat, whereupon the victim suddenly raised his head and spat it out, gasping. “Wot're you doin'?” “Reviving you with whisky,” said the doctor. “That ain't whisky, it's cold tea.” Thrilling. MORE IMPORTANT TO SAM Accused Man Could Do With One Law. yer and Use the Other One as a Witness. — Not so long ago a Quaker city law- [ yer found a formidable phalanx op- | posed to him in the trial of a case. Presumably the other side was not strong, at least in the lawyer’s estimation, in point of witnesses, and when he came to sum up, the attorney detailed the following to the jury as illustrative of the predicament of the other side: A negro was brought before the court to plead to an offence. “Sam Jackson, you are in custody ot the law,” announced the judge. “The state provides counsel for those who lack it. I hereby appoint these two gentlemen present in court to defend you. Have you anything to say?” Sam’s face brightened at the judge's words. “Two lawyers, yo honah!” he exclaimed delightedly . . . and then with an engaging grin: “Yes, suh, yo honah . . . but es it ain’t crowdin’ the law, cain't I swop off one of dem lawyers for a witness?” Just the Place. “Where is the hotel musicale being , given?” “I think it is on the inter- | mezzo floor.”
No man or woman who wants to succeed in the race of life can afford the handicap of headaches, insomnia, indigestion and debility. Nor can they afford to take anything that may keep up a continual irritation of the nervous system. Yet this is what many people do who drink excessive amounts of tea or coffee. For tea and coffee contain caffeine, a substance that is sometimes very injurious. Many doctors say that caffeine raises the blood pressure, irritates the kidneys, and over-stimulates the entire nervous system. Also that it is especially bad for growing children, or for any one who has any tendency to nervousness or insomnia. If you want to avoid a pos-
