ham’s Vegetable Compound had done for other women and decided to try it. It surely did wonders for me. I have no pains ’now and I can do my housework without any trouble at all. I will always praise your medicine as I do not believe there is a doctor that can do as much good in female weakness, and you may use these facts as a testimonial. ” —Mrs. Lester E. Warner, IL 1, Box 69, Onalaska, Wis. The reason women write such letters to the Lydia E. Pinkham Medicine Co. and tell their friends how they are helped is that Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound has brought health and happiness into their lives. LLOYD GEORGE DEFENDS BILL Ireland Home Rule Measure Is Passed on the Second Reading. ASQUITH PLAN TURNED DOWN Premier Declares Proposals Which Would Be Acceptable in England s Would Net Be Accepted in Ireland, London, April 2,—The house of commons passed the second reading of the Irish home rule bill. The vote was 348 to 94. Replying to arguments against the bill, Premier Lloyd George declared the government has every reason to be satisfied with the course of the debate, as it demonstrated that the government’s plan was the only one that held the field. The difficulty of the problem, said the premier, was that no proposals which would be acceptable to any party in this country would be accepted by any party in Ireland. If the people of Ireland were asked what plan they would accept, declared Lloyd George, they would say by an emphatic majority: “We want independence and an Irish republic.” The premier insisted there was no use of talking about self-determina-tion, since those who supported it must go to the full length of granting an Irish republic. “Self-determination,” continued the premier, “does not mean that everv part of the country, which has been acting • together for 100 years, should have the right to say: ‘We mean to set up a separate republic.’ There must be a limit to the application of any principle; otherwise it might be carried to every locality in every country throughout the world.”. Mr. Lloyd George said no one had accepted the plan of former Premier Asquith. Dealing with the suggestion of John R. Clynes, laborite, for a constituent assembly, the premier emphasized that the previous Irish con vention had failed, and asked if It were likely that the assembly proposed by Mr. Clynes would he any more successful. Since any proposal which Irish opinion would by a larg • majority accept would not be accepted by any party in Great Britain. Mr. Lloyd George declared, therefore the government must exercise its judgment for the United Kingdom and the whole empire in order to come to the wisest conclusion possible. The premier reiterated his declaration that the government plan held the field because it recognized the I fuel that the house oould uot satisfy Irish opinion in its present state without destroying the essential unity of the kingdom. The demand in Ireland for the moment was for Independence and secession, not self-government. Mr. Lloyd George said he wanted to say to “our American friends” that Eamonn De Valera was putting forward the same claim in exactly th? same language as Jefferson Davis, and that some of the men who voted for the Irish self-determination mo tion in the senate the other day ha I ancestors who fought to death against conceding to the southern states of America the very demand they are now supporting for Ireland. The acceptance of that demand, declared the premier, would never come. I It was a demand which, if persisted in. he said, would lead to exactly the I same measures of repression as in the I case of the southern states of America Great Britain, he declared, claimed ; ' nothing more than the United States ; I had claimed for themselves. I Great Britain, he added, would । stand on its own legs. There were certain powers which might be conferred upon Ireland when she settled down to an established union and accepted partnership with the United Kingdom, said the premier. Sir Edward Garson’s speech against the bill was remarkable principally because of his definite assertion that the crimes recently committed in Ireland were the work of men from America. The Uisfer lea<ler. standing grirn and erect immediately behind the extreme end of the government bench, said with unmistakable emphasis: “There has been a long and tragic hue and cry about crime in Ireland. The assassinations are not the work of my countrymen, but that of men from America who come over to Ireland to carry on the propaganda going on in America, ami which the British people never take the slightest trouble to answer.” In lower tones, which did not reach all parts of the house, he added: “I have been informed by Scotland Yard that six men have left America to assassinate me.” Train Kills Three in Auto. (Copyright. 1320, Western Newspaper Union) LESSON FOR APRIL 11 DEBORAH AND BARAK DELIVER ISRAEL, LESSON TEXT-Judges 4:4-5:31. GOLDEN TEXT—God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.— Ps. 46 :L ADDITIONAL MATERIAL — Judge* 4:1-3; Heb. 11:32, 33. PRIMARY T^PIC—A Brave Woman Helping a General. JUNIOR TOPIC—A Story of a Hero and a Heroine. INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOPIC —Fighting on God’s Side. YOUNG PEOPILE AND ADULT TOPIC —The Services of Women in National Leadership. The book ofJtludges covers the period from the Wi<iuest of Canaan and death of Joshuli to the Judgeship of Samuel. While Joshua and the elders of his gen^.’ation lived the people In some measure remained faithful to God in obedienc? to his Word, but the very next generation went into apostasy. Their declension may be accounted for as follows: 1. Failure to drive the Canaanites from their midst. They had gained the victory over them, but failing to exterminate them, their presence became a constant source of temptation. Their mistaken tolerance became their unI doing. 2. Their amalgamation with the Canaanites. Their close proximity to the people had its leavening effect, for they soon Intermarried with the heathen. Tolerance with the enemy is closely followed by union therewith, and quick disaster comes in the wake of such union. 3. Idolatry. Intermarriage with the heathen was soon followed by the । worship of the heathen gods. Thus Israel’s power was gradually weakened, so that Instead of being conquerors they became the conquered. God’s people lose their power over the world as soon as they make alliance with ft. In chapter 2:6-9 is given a synopsis of the book of Judges: 1. The sin of the people (vv. 013). 2. God’s judgment for their sin (vv. i 14. 15). i 3. Repentance of the people (3:9). 4. God’s deliverance at the hands of the Judges (vv. 16-19). A repetition of sin. oppression by the enemy, repentance on the pan of the people, and God’s deliverance, is the story of the book of Judges. 1. The Judgeship of Deborah (4: 4. 5). Her name means “Bee,” suggesting onlerly AJe suggested by another, “She answered her name by her industry, sagacity, and great use to the public.” The period was marked by awful oppression. The Israelites were helpless, fpr the enemy had !M)0 chariots of ir<ii. Deborah was an unique character. God raised her up for such a time ps this. Under a palm tree she held :tn open court for the administration of justice. 11. Deborah Summons Baiak (4: 6-10). Barak means “lightning." Deborah, being a prophetess, was able to select the man whose gifts would enable him to rally the forces needed to gain the victory over the formidable fee. Judging from his accomplishments, Barak was true to his name, for with lightning dispatch he wrought deliverance. 1. Deborah’s call (vv 8,7). It was God’s call through her. She gave definite instruction, as to the number of men and the strategy to be employed, assuring Barak that God would deliver Sisera. the captain of Jabin s army. Into his hand. 2. Barak's reply (v. 8). Expression i of unwillingness to go unless I>eborah would go with him should hardly be considered as cowardice or weakness, as it is a well-recognized fact that the presence of a woman, especially tbe । prophetess, would inspire courage on the part of the warriors. However, he should have believed God's ability to give the victory without the aid of a woman. 3. Bartik’s rebuke (vv. 9, 10). Deborah yielded his request, but made it : plain to him that it would detract from his honor as a conqueror, “for tae Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” 111. The Defeat of Jabin’s Army (vv. 11-16). Sisera, the captain, gathered a mighty army ^pd w. nt forth with full : assurance of ‘victory, but he made a sad mistake: he did not consider that it Was the Lorcas battle (v. 15). At the psychological inoment Deborah gave the signal to charge, assuring Barak that the Lord would give the victory (v. 14). Through supernatural interposition the enemy became panicstricken (see 5:20). IV. Sisera Killed by a Woman (vv. 17-24). In his flight he took refuge in .Tael’s tent. Under the guise of friendship, she committed the most heinous murder. She fastened his bead to the ground by means of a tent pin. V. Deborah and Barak’s Song of Victory (chap. 5). This was composed and sung in celebration of the marvelous victory I which God had wrought. Slie ascribes J the victory to God.
