What the time demands is not resignation
but energy. We want a faith which Inspires action. To accept the belief that a particular evil is inevitable is nt the way to remove it. If it will require a
lo;i time and a preat deal of work to r iih.Iv it, Uktc the more need that we bepin at once and work hard. It will continue to be unavoidable while we let it alone. The Mar will not end itself. We have unlimited faith in tlie power :ml ultimate success of lipht princi ples; but rilit principles are elective and triumphant only when they fill the hearts and puide the lives of men as ; eontrollinp inspiration. We have no patience with tlie idle notion that jut because we have Hipht on our .ido we shall, of course, succeed, whether we do much to achieve success or not. The triumph of the Hiitht in this struirple is not yet secure beyond the possibility oi failure, nor w ill it be for a lonp time to come. The American people have full control of the whole matter. It will be as they choose. Destiny pauses today, waitinp the decision of a question greater in what it involves than was ever before submitted to a nation. Our future is to be one of prosperity more ploriotis than the world has ever seen, or of desolation more ten ible,pf ruin more complete. The confidence of loyal men in the ollicers who administer the National Government has sometimes a morbid development. We ma)' depend on them too much. If all is left to them and they fail, the loss and the responsibility for it will both be ours. We believe in Mr. Lincoln. Our faith in his honesty is absolute and without qualification. He is thouphtful, shrewd, and largely endowed with practical common sense. TJicse qualities are invrduuble. Hut other qualities are also indispensable. The nation is engaged in a most terrible laiion is engaged in a most tcmoie .onfliot The Proo-lont U tbo ol.L f .OnilKl. ll)( 1 ristlHIlt IS lue Ullel executive oflleer of the nation. lie! c exc nrx-.lj nA'irnmi i r iter. !- . n .,-1ir.n it comes. ?Ir. Lincoln does not fliink htmsolf, t t ... . r . i a great man. lie tioes not Claim to be a leader, does not think he is required to be a leader. Nor do we. We do not object to his theory of his duty, which is, that he is simply to execute the will of the people, for I peo the people an? sovereign. Iut ?Ir. Lincoln is constitutional! v timid and! luiulrtting. If he has followed the) people.il has been rt a great dis-l tanee. J hey have been, from the beginning and until now, f;ir in ad vance of him. They are radical, but j the poliev of the Administration lias 1 been uniformly as conservative es it could well he made. v do not respect or trust the President less because he has made mistakes. The best and greatest men make mistr.ke:;. Put it should be constantlv remembered that all of Mr. Lineohi's mistakes have been, on the side of conservatism. There has not been a single exception. lie has never blundered bv being radical. This moderate policy, as it is called, has more than once imperiled the nation's life bv trving to conciliate its enemies. And this still goes on. There is nothing to indicate that anv important change is nbont to be made in the policy of the President. The voice of the people does not very easily reach the ear of their chief servant. He is surrounded bv men w ho are not at all desirous that he should know what the people wish, or should fully execute their will. It is not likely that the President reads newspapers much, and if he did they would not tclMiim what the masses say and feel. The Press generally i tells truth on some subjects; on ithers, only half-truths or the tdiadow of truths. Put the people can speak effect -ivelv. Our National Legislature will soon assemble. Let the people adopt true principles, and make Justice their law and their aim. Let them see to it that their own position is secure; impregnably intrenched in right. Then let them insist, through their representatives, that the whole war power of the nation shall be promptly and vigorously employed in executing the laws enacted at the last session of Congress to aid in suppressing the rebellion. Some of the most important of these measures have not been carried into effect in accordance with the original design. Those who predicted that certain enactments of the last Congress would be practically null and powerless, have used their utmost energies to verity their own prophecies, and to defeat the only measures which can save the couiitrv. Let the people take note of these things. Let them think, speak and act. An interesting letter from Tennessee by Mr. E. J. Putman is in type, but is crowded out ; will appear next week.
