A we promised last week, we ro on with some thoughts about the amount of knowledge, and the extent of mental application and culture in this part of the country, or especially, in IJandolph County. We do not speak of th? lack of knowledge among for the sake of j finding fault with the at or the present; the defects of the past are out of reach; but if there is to be any improvement in the future we must, in some way, come to see the truth in regard to this whole subject. To proceed directly, we do not know of any one here who is engaged in the study of any particular branch of knowledge; or who has ever thus sought to learn what may be known of one subject. Yet it is only by such concentration of interest and labor upon one thing, that any one can attain true Kchularship,or in any degree increase the total amount of knowledge araong us. Do not think we are finding fault with people for trying to learn too many thinirs at once; we do not do not trvinix to know of any one who is learn anything. Very few people in this region think that w hen they have 'quit going to school," there remains anything more to be studied or known. While at school their time is all devoted to the study of the elcmentarY branches. There are wry few, if any, of our friends who have st'tilicJ Chemistry; alt hough there are several who can teach it. .No one among us knows uny thing of the Flora of our own County, or could give the character of the plants in a single fence-cor :r. There are other branches of know 1 - edge of which we might speak, but we conclude with Geography. If any one, even among our teachers, has more than a slight, superficial knowledge of Geography, we are not aware of it : although of course, any body can teach it with the book in his hand. These things demand attention. Thinking and resolve must go before any valuable, work. If any of our statements are not strictly correct we will gladly modify them.
