They are determined to regard the great problem of the times as merely a political question. The lead era of the so-called Democratic par ty are anxious to obtain peace for the nation by bringing back the same state of things which produced the rebellion. They want a pretended peace which shall give the slave pow er time to recruit its wasted legions, replace its exhausted resources, and recover from the almost mortal blow it has already received. These men have fo long obeyed every behest of the power which is now in anna for the overthrow of our government, and the destruction o our national existence, that they stil tremble at the thought of resistance to its demand. They are willing slaves, and have learned to love their chains. They will resist every at tempt to deal with the obvious cause of our national troubles, just as long as the- have the slightest hope o success in their ctforts to deceive the people; but whenever they are com pelled to recognize the powerfu movement which is going on in our land, the great wave of popular pro gress, w hich like uthe ocean's might v swing" is carrying the people, tin whole people, up to heroic bights, we may be assured these men will fol low; they are not fitted to lead, tliej will go with the current, will echo the' popular voice; for these politicians love place and power so well that no principles are too distasteful for them to profess. It should be remembered, however, that men of timid and servile minds, like these politicians of the so-called Democratic party, being from their nature and habits unable to appreciate true elevation of principle, and looking at all things from their own level, cannot be trusted even when they profess the most radical and liberal principles. They defile whatever they touch, and will pervert and profane the highest truths nnd the holiest ideas by making them subservient, if possible, to temporary expediency and a success obtained by policy. There is hut little vitality in party nanics; nnd it will not do to rivc a man a place in our national councils because he belongs to any party, nor unle53 he is devoted to those principles of justice and freedom and truth which are the basis of all true national prosperity. The man who does not believe in universal freedom opposes the only method ly which the enemies of our country can he subdued, nnd ournaional life be perpetuated. co(i:kmn! tin: a(:ii:isition or i.N()U!,i;i)(;i:. There is an increasing interest, in he minds of some of the teachers of his county, in things pertaining to heir profession and to education in general. We see some encouraging indications around us, and are led to iope that perhaps the time draws near when something will bo done. Thus far we have merely been geting ready to begin. And we fear t that much even of this preparatory work remains vet to be done. There is one great lack among our teachers; they can never succeed un til this want is supplied. They need enthusiasm in the pursuit of knowledge, it is not enough that they study carefully the best methods of imparting instruction; they mu.st have knowledge before they can communicate it. Our teachers are influenced too much bv a low and unworthy habit which is universal among people in this: i;art of the country, that of estirnatin; knowledge according to its money value. No man will become truly learned who desires knowledge chiefly because it will aid him in business, or in the acquisition of wealth. Knowledge is desirable for its own sake. It is a good thing, es sentially and absolutely; and is to be sought after because of its inher cut worth and beauty. No man who docs not seek it with this singleness of devotion ever obtains very much of it. Hut most of our teachers are in clined to value only such acquUi tions as are supposed to be directly available in their calling. There is a general timidity in regard to at tempting anything in advance of the popular demand. The absence of any generous and inspiring enthusiasm among teachers nourishes a corresponding indillci enee in the omuls. I here are very few of the young people of our conn ty who are seeking knowledge with earnest and persistent effort. W look around us in vain for manifest ations of that unconquerable thirst for knowledge which creates oppor tunities, which upholds the student in discouragement, toil and poverty. and ever gravitates resistlessly to wards its chosen object. There is no lack of time or oppor tunities for young men around us to acnuire knowledge. Many of them have abundant leisure. Men havt become eminent for scholarship whose circumstances were far less favorable than those which surround most young men of our acquaint ance. The time devoted to billiards would bo suMicient to acnuire fJerman or French; and what is wasted in lounging at street-corners, and on store-boxes, would give one a res peetable acquaintance with English literature. It is the want of indus try, of a worthy aim, and of a high . . ... . and manly spirit, which prevents im provement among our young men.
