About 10.000 rebels had collected on the Bayou Terhe; against this force, Gen. Banks sent Weitzeln, Emory'a and Grover'i Division, J and sninegurihoat.J. The enemy has been beiten in several land fights, losing many in killed wounded and prisoners; about 1,600 of the latter have fillen into our hands. Ten of their steamers were burned, and a large amount of stores captured. Our wounded have been fent to New Orleans, they number about two hundred, and are reported doing well. The. Union Club at Nashville, Tenn., numbering 673 members, have published a declaration of principle, thoroughly loyal, and anti-slavery. They invite free labor to Tennessee; the abolition of slaver' at the earliest practicable time; they affirm as the correct policy that no traitor or ?ympathizer, and especially no disloyal slaveholder, shall share in ruling th? destiny ofthe nation at the ballot box.

This cae would very likely not be alluded to in this paper at pre?ent, but for tho manv erroneous and contradictory rumors alloat in te community and through the newspapers of other localities. The matter is caught at and bandied around by nearly all our exchanges, many of them giving names of persons and plices of which we at home know nothing. If gentlemen of the press could be in a little Ies hate to get such things before their readers, (before they know anything about them themselves,) they might, at all events, have a chance of greater accuracy. The truth is, for we happen to have had means of knowing I something about the matter, Mr. Cilvin Bunch, of GreenslorkTp., wa arre-ted on suspicion of being criminally implicated in the death of his wife, who died, recently with symptoms somewhat like those of arsenical poisoning. At the preliminary examination he was bound over out of the grave, and the stomach and other viscera removed and placed in the hands of a competent chemist in Cincinnati for examination. Concerning the question of the guilt or innocence of the prisoner, we have no opinion to express. That is a matter to be determined by the proper leil tribimal, and to elucidate whichl all this preliminary trouble is! taken. Thus in Grammar there were four times as many examples to be analyzed, as were in any way necessary. There id nearly always I believe, a deal of humbug connected with the examination of teachers. In fact, of all the different classes of people with whom I have become acquai tit led, it seems most dillicult for teachers to avoid a ort of onesuledness. Nearly every teacher has o hobby, and thinks there is some one thing in which most teachers are deficient; and that if this lack could be supplied, our tystem ofeducati on would be nearly what it should be. Some have Grammar for a specialty, other ' the singing metho'l of learning Geography, (and there never wan a humbug more absurd than that;) and just now some pf our Randolph co., teachers have a sort of Mental Arithmetic mania. Hut all will be right C4in the long run" doubtless, as wc know that the world's progress in never in a straight line, but always by a series of oscillations between extremes. Yours. J. B Harrison.
