Letters Irom Washington received here, mention a serious altetahon in the House en Saturday between Mr. Branch1, late Secretary of the Navy, a nd Mr, White, of Florida. The former introduced a resolution lot enquiry concerning the live oak lands in Florida, aud during the debate accused Mr, W. ofliaviqg palmed upon thegovernineot a barren tract, under the pretence that they were oak lands. Mr. White denied this, said that the sale had been approred.by a Committee ot the House andthat he had offered to take the landsfbatki-andin turn, accused the late S ecretary of hating expended $4u 3 of the navy fund in his'efloits to prove this a bad bargain, trrough the purchase money had been only $5000. Air. Branch during the controversy accesed Mr. W. of making false statements, and professed his readiness to defend himself here and elsewhere. Mr. White appears to be considered as standing in a defensive attitude, the hostilities it is thought must proceed, if at all, from Mr. Branch. -. " New-York Standard.

When Dido entertained Eneas-and his companions, she is said to have cal led for a capacious goblet of massive gold, profusely aderned with gems which she filled with pyre wine. Ha ving made the due libation to Jupiter and the bthei divinities, she luted the wise to her lips, and then handing it to ' Bitias, her principal officer, he deliverea it to t-eneas, wno eageriy aranic it off; and afterwards the bowl being replenished was offered to the other chiefs. To drink in this manner was considered a proof of friendship, and the cup thus presented was termed i philotesiakulis, or a bumper glass. From the manner In which this ccr - emony is spoken of by Cicero, we may infer that in his time it was in a great measure confined to the Greek. But in a subsequent age it appears to have been generally adopted by the Romans as it is frequently noticed by their prose writers as well as by their poets. The word bumper which has frequent, ly puzzled Dr. Pegge and other ety mologists, is only a slight variation of me old trench phrase bon er, signifying a worthy equal, or boon companion. To drink n cop of good fellow-
ship, or bumper health, may therefore,
be regarded as strictly 6ynommous with the Greek philotesian propinien. What is Davie Crocket about!
