s vti rdiy rcnnrAnv 2, 1832. In another part of this piper may be found th preceeding" of the United States Senate upon the nomination of MaRtix Van Bcre.. In a remark on this subject in our last, we inadvertently substituted the name of Blair for that of Miller, a Senator from S. Carolina, who voted against the nomination. o::::::::o We have received another commu nication from our correspondent "Truth," which we are compelled to reject. 'We are truly sorry that an occaston has occurred, in which a sense ci duty imperatively demands the exercise of this privilege. When an investigation of the acts of public men i required through the medium of the Press, our columns shall ever be (as v e trust they have been) free to the purpose; yet when men transcend the bounds which reason and decency prescribe, and give ve to their malevolent dispositions in tirades of personal abuse, they must seek s we other vehicle than that which we control, to hear it off. Articles of this description are rarely productive of any good results, and as rarely fail to call down upon the author the justly incurred contempt and indignation ofa candid and enlightened public. To this writer, our columns shall be free, when discussing proper topics, but when he shall have digressed, as in this anstance, we shall ever feel bound to treat Ins communi cations accordingly. Not however. requiring a rigid compliance with this principle from one, and suffprii g others to perpetrate the same offence ami pass with impunity; we wish to treat all alike, and those that are first to feel the mortifications of disappointment should attribute it solely "to themselves, and should HiTbrJ no paliation from any misconstruction of our intention?. :os5"We would particularly invite the attention of the 'Farmer to a com. munication in another part of this per, the subject of which, is the propriety of adopting some effectual measures for procuring Seed Corn of good quality, and thereby obviate the difficulties heretofore experienced in the grov.ing of Corn from imperfect seed. While upon this subject, we would suggest the propriety of forming an Agricultural Society in this County several counties in the State are instituting societies of this description, none cf which can claim superiority over this coUDty in any respect as beinj more peculiarly adapted to Agricultural pursuits. Farmers, what say you to this? o::::::::o DIED At Armiesburgh, on Thursday last Mr James Chesnut. On Monday last at Montezuma Mr. Robert Woods. Communicated. VIRGINIA Almost every paper which comes to us from the Ancient Dominion, is more or .less occupied with the nil absorbing subject of free negroes and slavery. Sad news from that ldustrous part of Europe will have reached you not long alter your sympathetic letter was on us way to v.s But it is now, more than ever that the vanquished although not subdued Boles are in need offtiendly assistance, thousands of them had rather perish on a foreign load, than ac knowledg their patriotism as guilt, and submit to the voke of a Russian despot. ' In no instance, not even du ring the struggle could be so well em ployed, the contributions of the friends of true glory; that which i- founded on the basis ot independence and freedom. An American Committee has, at my request, been formed in Bans, to assist in discharge f the duty conferred up on them by the donors in the United States. We keep up an understanding with the National Bohsh Committee that has lately teen formed in this city and with the I rench committee, in order that the distribution be asjudi cious as possible. It is from the monument which your predecessors had raised to Kosciusko on your classic cround of v est Boint, that the first successor to hiscountrvmen have crossed the Atlantic; let us hope for the d ry when on that same monu ment the resurrection for poland shall be celebrated. Receive, my dear young friends the parental afiection and blessing on the American veteran. LAFAYETTE For the Herald. Mr. Clarke, In consequence of the imperfect quality of the corn in this County, and in the Wabash country generally, we have deemed it proper to draw the attention of th Farmer to aplan, whkh if adopted, might enable them to secure seed corn that will be certain to cerminate. From the best information, there is
pa-(but little corn in the county, but what
was more or less injured by the early frosts, and will the Farmers Mold their arm?" and trust to -good luckM to furnish them with gec-d seed, which will bring forth "an hundred told,' or will they go to work, and adopt suitable means to procure sound corn. We fancy we hear rnary responding we are willing to adopt any teesonable mode to secure good seed, but at the same time ask the question, "What must we do to be saved" from starvation for the want of good seedi? -We will name the tollowi&g as a mode suggested by many of the intelligent citizens of the county viz: that the farmers in each township call a meeting of its citizens, and contribute such sums as might be deemed necessary to procure the quantity of seed corn re quired, each individual contributing, in proportion to the quantity he might want, and then appoint -an agent to make the purchase of good seed corn in Kentucky, or at some other point if more desirable. It may be considered' that this plan would be attended with too much trouble and expense A view of the present situation of our Farmers and what it will be, in the event of a failure of the next corncrop will (we have no doubt) be a sufficient stimulus to use all means in our power to avert the reult of planting corn which will not germinate or if it does, will not grow to maturity. This course pursued, with the bles?ing of Providence, we may reap an abundant harvest. If the foregoing plan should not be adoptcd, we would suggest to those Farmers who may have such corn as will grow to let the Editor have their names who we have- no doubt would give publicity to the people where they might procure seed com.
