SIISCEIXANEOU9. Pick Pockets. A gentleman from Kentucky, by the name of Scovil, who happened to be present the night before !at at the book sale of Isaac T. Doughty, No. 169 Broadway, was robbed of a pocket book containing $79.
Feeline himself unusually pressed in
the crowd by some persons behind him, his suspicion was excited, and not with,
out cause, that some person was robbing
him, for on placing his hand on his coat pocket he found that the book and
money had been abstracted as above tated. He immediately communicated
his loss to the auctioneer, who dispatch
ed the clerk to the Park Theatre for Mr
Merritt the police officer, and caused the doors in the interim to be closed,by which all were prevented from getting out In a short time Mr. Merrit arrived, to whom the facts were detailed, who finding the company in the auction room exceedingly good humoured, and equally anxious with the person robbed, to ferret out the thief, pioceeded to
tate his errand there and to scrutinize the company. Almost the first person
whom he surveyed wasanold pickpocket and convict, by the name of Rickhow, whom he took aside and searched, but nothing bring found upon him he was placed under a guard in one corner, while he proceeded to make further discoveries. The second whom he recognieed as a suspicious person, was also a
pickpocket and convict recently out of
the state prison, by the name ol JUcKenna. He was also searched, but with the same success, and placed also under guard. The third and last, by
the name of Kimberley, also an old convict, and equally liable to suspicion as the others, was then scearched and plated in the corner with the other two. These three constituting the only persons in the room justly liable to suspicion, it was concluded by Mr. Merritt; that one or the other of them had com
mitted the offence, either separately or!
as accomplices, and that the pocket book and money had been secretly dis-j posed of by them in some way or other. Mounting the rostrum of the auctioneer he desired the attention ot the company, and then proceeded to tell them that the stolen proporty was in all probability in the room, and, for aught he kne', transferred by the thief to the
pocket f some one present, the better to elude suspicion. He, therefore requested every individual to search his own pockets to ascertain the fact; this was done simultaneously by all, but to no effect. Again commanding attention, he requested the company to stoop down Lnd examine the floor. This they all did, when one rising up presented
the lost money which he round at his feet, consisting of one fifty dollar bill, one twenty, one five, and two two's on the National bank in this city, as the same had been described by Mr. Scovil, previous to its being found. The company here separated, pleased lit the restoration of the money, while the three who had been placed in the
corner were given in the charge of
tome watchmen and taken to the watch
house where they were detained until morning, and then committed by the magistrate to Brid well for further examination. Cour. Enq.

It is not often we take notice of the quarrels between our friends of the Press for when thosequarrels are of a personal character, we regard them as matters in which our readers would feel little or no interest. The long continued
sparing between the Editors of the Louisville Public Advertiser and Journal
appear to have come to a point, and the serious tone of the following extract
from paper of last Monday, we hope
will be a sufficient opology to our read ers for giving place to it in our columns If the intention of the Editor of the Ad
vertiser be followed up, an investigation
will be brought about which will deeply involve the interests of the idividuals concerned, and cannot, from its charac
ter, fail to prove interesting to the community at large. From the Louisville AH vertiser of Monday lait. TO THE PUBLIC.
An article appeared in the Journal of Saturday, containing the following, amongther charges.
u The Editor, (meaning the Editor of
the Louisville I uplic Advertiser,) denies having once sold a valuable boat's
cargo for a fellow citizen, and escaped
had the misfortune to have his cranium
ensconced in hair of a glowing red colour, and took his seat near the pulpit. Soon after a sailor entered and proceeded leisurely up the aisle, until he
came to the bench immediately behird
the red haired gentleman, whereon he took his seat. Mistaking, perhaps, the
head before him for the open door of a
stove, containing a goodly quantity of
stone coal, fully ignited, and sending
forth its bright and genial ravs, and
his thoughts absorbed in the eloquence
and subject of the speaker, he had not
been seated many minutes, before he was observed to be holding his hands both together, as if in the act of warming them, against the red head of the gentleman before him, to the no small amusement of those around, and to the complete upsetting of the gravity of the clergyman.
He humbly trusted that the cause of his laughing v,a3 a sufficient excuse. Of
I course it may be readily supposed that
he was at once acquitted, after enjoying a hearty laugh together with his accusers. X. X.
