I ROM THE O. S. JOURNAL. The following abstract of the entire population of nineteen states, and two territories, as ascertained by the late Census, has been compiled from our exchange papers, and is, no doubt, nearly, if not iptite, correct. We have added, in parallel lines, the returns for 1 820, and the increase in each State and Territory since that period. New York shows the greatest gain, and Ohio the next. The number of free white males in the latter State; the reader will recollect, exceeds that of free w hite females hy upwardsonn,(XX) a difference much greater than wc should have anticipated.

the Legislature.

Another subject, vitally important to every freeman, has been, as usual, a matter of much solicitude during the present session, to I wit., the apportionment of Senators and Repreientativesto the General Assembly for the ensuing live years. Thc rapid increase of population in this state, has necessarily addtd to the num-

I ber of members in each house of the General

Assembly. The subject ofbringing into efficient operation our school funds, has received tho attention its importance demanded ; and such an advance has been made toward the object of such

general solicitude (the universal education of

our youth,) as our present meant and public lentiment will justify. On another subject, as a farmer myself, and a member of the committee on roads, I have taken much interest for many years, and haye constantly had in yiew, the great importance

to the agricultural interest of our country of

convenient (acuities of intercourse. Daring the present session we have laid before the public, reports on Rail-way nnd Canals,to enable tho people to judge of the utility of those important meant of transporting the surplus products of so rich and fertile a country as ourt. That the cheapcst, best, and safest mode should be adopted to shorten both time and distance, in tha transportation of the abundance of the country, ii certainly one of our most important interests. Finally, sir, permit me thnsin troubling you to a?k the favor of you, to inform my fellowcitizens of your county, that I have concluded to offer my services to the people of the state, ai a candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor, at the approaching August election a privilege which our happy constitution secure! even to the humblest citizen. Having it not in my power personally to visit all my fellow-citizens, I take this occasion to make known my pretensions; and having been a citiien of Indiana for eighteen years, and during the last ten years a member of the Senate, I beg leave to refer my fcllow-citizeni to the journals, debates and proceedings of the Senate, for an outline of my official courie, and of soliciting their favorable regard for their and your humble servant.
