tionate to the number of their polls was introduced on Saturday, by Mr. Wallace of J. ar - -yus, on Monday and Tuesday, the sov-. :.; of considerable debate. Another lull on the same subject was reported yesterday morning by Mr. Hillis, chairman of a select committee heretofore appointed on that subject,, which proposes to give 1,000 dollars to each county without regard to its size or population. This latter bill passed to a second reading, and the former was

re-committed to a select committee. To both of the propositions, as originally presented, considerable opposition was made; and uhat kind of a bill will bj passed cannot at present be predicted with any degree of certainty. A bill supplemental to the act for the apportionment of Senators and Representatives, was introduced on Monday, by Mr. Ilolman. It provides for an additional member to the counties of Dcar-

nd that ii! born, Switzerland, Washington, Marion

ol-nt.il K nnv .imi an rulrtilinnit -..- 4n

- - - .fill, I. ' J the; threo counties of Monroe, Owen, and Green; and one to the counties of Shelby and Decatur. Several amendments have been made to the bill, allowing additional members in other parts of the State, and it has been ordered to be engrossed for a third reading. The Canal bill, as amended in tlie Senate, continues to lie on the table in the House of Representative?. One or two attempts to take it up have been made without success, the friends of the

Canal generally voting against it. The general opinion we believe is that no bill on this subject will pass during the present session. It is believed that the Legislature will not be ready to adjourn before next Saturday week. P. S. Since tlie above was in type, the supplemental apportionment bill has been postponed indefinitely, as also

;te objects, to our country, mid has the bill introduced by Mr. IIim.is,

giving 10011 ot the three per cent, fund to each county in the state. It is believed that the bill on this subject introduced by Mr.W.Li,cr,of J. as amended, will pass the House.' The provisions of the bill shall be. given hereafter.

fering we copy from a Chester (l'a.) paper; it illustrates the fidelity of the dog:

" One awful catastrophe has come to our knowledge, the effect of the inclement weather on Friday evening. Jonathan Clayton and another man, his cousin (whose name we have

not heard) attempted to go home, late in the evening, but that home they were never more

to see. A person passing next morning between the Providence School House and .Meeting House, was attracted by a dog. Perceiving somclliimr unusal in the manner of the animal, he was led to discover the body of a man, the face only of which was above the snow the body was that of the unfortunate Jonathan Clayton. M

REFORM. Tho spirit of proscription, which has pervaded our country for nearly two years, has found another victim in this place. The eastern mail which arrived on Wednesday last, brought information of the removal of Samih l Hi-.MiiaisoM from the office of post-masti r ia this town, and of the appointment of Jon Cain as his successor. We believe thera has been no instance of the exercise of the pro-

serioing spirit ol this administration, which was more wanton, nioro uncalled for by the public interest, or more unexpected by those interested, than this one. Formerly, tho petitions of the people in the vicinity of postoffices controlled tho appointment of post

master; now, it is in he power of one or two

favored individuals to thwart the wishes of the people interested, and procure the removal and appointment of whom they please, without re

gard to the public interest, and in defiance of the people's request. Why was this removal made? Was the incumbent unqualified todischargethe duties of the ollice'? Without fear of contradiction we assert that no office in the state has been better conducted. Did the people demnnd bis removal I They were not consulted, and it was done in direct opposition to a petition signed by nearly all to whom it was presented, praying his retention in office. The real reason then, ns every body must know, is, becauso be did not happen to think that General Jackson was better qualified than every body else for President. And yet this is the administration in which, according to a resolution adopted at a late " OrKAT JArK.sos Mkitino" in (his place, the friend, of Repuh. Uranism, Union, and Free Institution, contin-

uc in I' linn: UIC MgriCSl fTMewe" ..'.' Mr.IlKNi.KRsoN was appointed during the ad ministration of Mr. Monroe. He wa, on f the earliest settlers of this place, and has been post-uiastcr since the first establishment of tho office. To him the post-ortino department ha. been much indebted for information in recard to the situation of this country : ad to iira al . so the New Purchase is very considerably indebted for h.s attention and zeal i recommend ing and urcing the establishment of tu.,1 routes.
