POETRY.
A MOTHER'S GRAVE. This is a subject which must find its way to the heart. The ideas are natural and well expressed. To where they hallow'd bones are laid Far from the busy haunts of men, To converse, Mother, with thy shade I come again. Oh! I have felt affliction's wave, And with her billows mounted high, since last I knelt me on thy grave, And heav'd a sigh. When shall I close these weary eyes? When shall my wandering spirit flee - Or in this grave, or in the skies. Find rest and thee! The meekness of thy mind I need, To meet the world's rebuke and scorn, Oh! Mother, but to copy thee Why was I born? Even now I hear thy warning voice, That oft has wrung my infant earOh! If thy child can have his choice, Spirit appear! The gentle accents to my heart Shall solace soft, and vigor give, To suffer well affliction's smart, While yet I live! Yes - and. Religion's holy form Well known and well belov'd by thee, Should more my wavering heart conform To Heav'n's decree! Peace, that the world can never give, The world can never take away - Should be my portion, could I live Thy virtuous way! And soon the scene shall roll away, And soon all earth born cares shall cease, And I with thee in silent clay Shall rest in peace. But not forever shall the grave Triumphant boast his power and might, For GOD shall call us thence to live In endless light! AMPHLETT THE FORCED STORY Ancedote of Lord Kelly Lord Kelly was like his prototype Fals= Taff, "not only witty himself, but the cause of wit in other men." Mr Andrew Balfour the Scottish advocate, a man of considera= ble humor, accompanied bv great formality of manners, happened to be one of a convivial partv. when his lordship was at the head of the table. After dinner he was asked to sing but absolutely refused to comply with the pressing solicitations of the company. At length Lord Kelly told him that he should not escape; he must either sing a song, tell a story, or drink a pint bumper. Mr. Balfour, being a very abstemious man chose rather to tell a story than incur the forfeit. "One day, (said he, in a pompous manner) a their, in the course of his rounds saw the door of a church open. He walk_ ed in thinking that even there he might lay hold of something. Having secured the pulpit cloth, he was retreating when lo! he found the door shut. After some considernation, he adopted the only means of escape left, namely, to let himself down by the bellrope. The bell, of course, rang, the people were alarmed and the thief was taken just as he reached the ground. When they were dragging him away, he looked up , and emphatically adderessing the bell as I now address your Lordship, "Had it not been, (said he) for your long tongue and empty head, I had made my escape." Flour was salable on ly for $8 per bbl. at Cadiz, Aug 25, when the Phoenix, (arrived at Philadelphia) sailed. There was no later news from our squadron. Col A HINT FOR LAWRENCEBURGH, I, T.
