Tcrpib Nailed to thk Counter. : At Dover Hill, on Tuesday, Turpie
said that the Act of the Legislature of Virginia cedingjthe North-we9t territory to the Congress of the confederation, required Congress toprohibit slaTer j therein as one of the conditions of the grant. Judge Morton in reply, denied the statement' and referred to the Virginia act in the first vol. of Revised Statutes, to show there was no such condition in it. In the debate at this place on Thursday, Turpie made the statement that Virginia attached such a condition to the session. but that it was contained in the deed made by the Commissioners conveying the territory and not in the act of cession. Morton in reply, and greatly to Turpie's astonishment, suddenly produced a copy of the deed from the library of Judge Ellis, and read it to the crowd, showing that there was no such condition in it. Turpie's mortification was extreme, and there was not a man of any party present who did not feel for him. He stood absolutely convicted of a mean falsehood, which he had invented to break the force of an argument he could not answer. The perspiration stood on his brow, and if he felt as mean as he looked hit agony must have been intense. The sudden production of a document, wtich he supposed could not be found nearer than the State Library, at Indianapolis, furnishing overwhelming evidence of his falsehood, from which there was no escape, covered him and his friends with shame. "The bread's all gone, too." , "Well, give me a knife and fork, and let me go through the motions." The National Democratic party has refused to bestow either cold victuals or bread on Douglas, but a fraction of the party have donated a knife and fork with which he can go through the motions of running for President. Not a morsel of food is left for him in the Democratic house, bnt he is content with the appearance ofthe thing. After all his aira, he geta en empty nomination, which affords him about one hundredth part the chance of getting into the White House, that he has of getting into Abraham's bosom! The American stomach is a tormenting organ. It is generally out of order, lhe reason ia obvious. The drviog man of bu siness has not time or will not take time properly to masticate his food. Id such cases the fact is apparent by general paleness, weak circulation, impaired breathing, cold extremites, fcc. It may be asked, from what ia the blood derived? We aogwer, principillj from the food. But if the food ia not properly di geated, there can be no healthy blood, and consequently no adequate nutrition of the body. The bad blood will irritate the heart, clog op the lungs, atopify the brain, obstruct the liver, and cause derangement everywhere. The feeble girl will suffer from chlorosis aud menstrual irregularities, the- adult from dyspepsia, neuralgia, and headaches; maDy will suffer from boils and akin diseases; the bilioua from iofla med liver, dropsy and constipation; and the care worn professional man from every ill in Pandora's box. Now, it is certain that if the deficient amount of iron in tbe blood can be supplied, the symptoms of disease will consequently rease. Chemistry proves that the only form in which iron can assimilare with the blood is that of a protozyde, a salt very liable to further oxidation; when it becomes neaaly inert in the stomach. I a the Peruvian Syrup, by chemical in fenuily, this difficulty has been for the rat time overcome; and thia assertion ii amply sustained by the distinguished Chemist and Assayer to the State of Massachusetts, Dr. Hajes. It must be admitted, then, to be a most important addition to. the Materia Medics, and an invaluable remedy for many of the Worst forma of disease. 'Pxu'vux Smr is t.
