A&REaT ox a Caiacz or Bask Rob, birt. Some three or four years agothft TLtnk of Watsoti fc Shannon, a-
Terre Haute, was broken into and robbed of four thousand dollars. There was no clue at the time to the perpetrator of the crime, and the affair had pretty well paised out of recollection of the public. At the time of the robbery a man named Monnenger.a German. wa3 employed a a porter about the Bank. He bhyrtly after left and returned to hia native countrv. A few tlays ago he arrired in thia city, having shipped a larga quantity of imported liquors, whioh he was ready to dispose - of. News of his arrival here and of his apparent wealth reached Terro Haute, when suspicion was aroused that he had been speculating on the missing four thous nd dollars, and on Wednesday ho was arrested by officers from that point, and wa3 taken back yesterday to stand hi trial for it. We do not know what the evidence against him is, and of course can give no opinion as to his guilt or innocence of the serious charge against him. Stute dentinal. S3T An Indian, or rather, as he himself believes a white, stolen from home when a child by the Kioway Indians, and brought up by them, has lately been 'prospecting"in Lawrence county for a silver mine, of which his tribe "has preserved a traditional description. His name is Sachem Zum Glaka, and he has found, he say, several of the identifying marks handed down by the fathers of the tribe, but still lacks one or two, in a point a few miles west of Bedford, on Salt creek. A similar tradition of the existence of a silver mine in that locality, has existed anions' the white settlers, and an old man named need, who aiecl there recently, says he was in it once when young, but the enterance was afterwaids so skillfully concealed that he never could find it again. Dr. Richard Owen says his geological examinations in that vicinity have detected the existence of silver there. 3rThe "special artist" of one of the New York illustrated papers recently visited Washington. One of his objects was to sketch the interior of Judge Douglaa house. The Judge was not at home, but the artist, as he sat in the library, pulled out his sketch-book and commenced taking notes. But this occupation was interrupted by the entrance of the Judge's mother;in-law, who peremptorily ordered 4Craypn" to leave the house. The poor artist attempted to explain the nature of his mission, but the lady disdained tolisten. Taking Cray- ' on by his arm, 6be escorted him to the front dcor, and to accelerate his departure, placed her hand upon his shoulders, and landed him at once in the middle of the street. Where will thi muscle-mania end 1 STThe New York Journal of Commerce takes the ruption at Charleston thus cooly : On the whole, we anticipate good rather than evil from the adjournment to Baltimore, and see no reason to despair of the commonwealth. This is the view we take of it exactly. So far as "the commonwealth" ia concerned, we very confidently "anticipate good rather than eivii from adjournment to Baltimore." As to the weal of the Democracy, that is for tunately another thing. Fortunately, because it has since "gone to the dt.gs." ISAAC BALL. , , . . ...
