from motives of delicacy, he would be excused from the jury box, as the Judge thought it ought not to be, and was not required of any man, to sit in judgment upon his own crime ; that he knew he was engaged in the Mountain Meadow Massacre, which atrocious crime was now before the Grand Jury. That juryman walked out of the jury box, and is supposed to be walking yet, as he has not been heard of since. Indeed, every juryman is suspected to .have been engaged in that murder or known to have relatives who were ! John G. Lee, President of that Bishopric, Bishop Haite, and some half a dozen other Church officials, are openly charged of helping, in person, in that massacre. and are known to have from the date of that massacre until now, the stock and property of ihe murdered train in their possession. The little childreo say, this man has my little cow, that man my colt, &c. And the children declare that one of the girls was killed for saying "there comes my cow," as her pet cow was driven up to be milked. The Mormons aver that the Indians did the murder; and yet all the children and most of the property are, and have been, in possession of the Mormons. All in the train were killed, who were supposed to be old enough to give testimony. I have seen all the children now alive, eighteen in number, seven boys and eleven girls. Over half the children must have been in the arms of their mother when that parent was killed, and cannot now be more than three years old. The smallest girl
was shot in the right arm below the elbow, as is supposed, by the same ball that killed the
out what are their parent names ? How sad !
And this massacre was committed in the name of religion, and by authority of the Mormon Church ! Brigham Young is charged with counseling the massacre. I believe he did;— it least there is much testimony against him Brigham Young offers to deliver up all persons charged with this and other deeds of blood, provided the Judges will recognize the territorial jury-law ; which gives Probate Judges the power to select Grand and Petit
Jurors for the Supreme Court. This they will not do, because then there would be trials of all suspected persons ; and, of course, acquit als : or else, why do they contend for the ob servance of a law in direct opposition to the organic act ? There is a strong probability that the enactments of the last territorial legislature will be declared void and powerless by the Supreme Judges, as they are all and singly in direct opposition to a provision in the territorial oranic act, to the effect that all laws rnust be passed and signed within forty days after the
legislature ehall convene. Thin wa v.ot done in any sirgle Coactmrrit. On the contrary, there esn not I fo?cd ary journal book or daily record kept n' any Ia?ilt t ve proceedings ; aud it can be prolan that after the forty day had txpired, ai.d tbe lej, ;ilalure diidved, that a committee, appointed for that purpose, were busily engaged in altering an: amending the legislative raetment, tv suit the noli. us of lh Mornu Governor, so that he mould nn them.
