•^ffjSnmeihing about Monument! and Monumental mijWorth—A Slide on the Rats Pavement—Dr. jVcrqnet' Extraction of Metal* from the Human ^ZJtoay—The Holidays in New York.
One of the most amusing things to «i New Yorker is this frantic giration» and frenzied Hdicule of the Abolition pres*, when some unluckv "dongli face" averts lo tlie mutability of tlic American Union, or unwittingly hints of duties regarding its perpetuity—forthwith the Tribune flings up its "scar and yellow -leaf arms, and in a strain of sarcastic elo-
squence
yells "B»hooI Bohao!—fly to your
^council rooms or the country's lost!" Tlte New England society, of this city, recently selected 0. W. Holmes of Boston.. to 'deliver the eetni-cenlennial oration at their celebration, ("ontrary to certain expectations
Air. Hclmes expressed. a desire to see this kicked Union continued—he even in his speech had the audacity to advise New Yorkbrs to countenance the continuance of the in famous compact of'76. This was enough for the "onn idea" men! Greeley immediately (and rto doubt with a tear in his eye) scratched O. W.-Holmes from the roll of fanatacism, and mercilessly handed him down to a sub-edito-rial inquisitor, to be properly annihilated in the morrow's issue.,
Thereupon that consistent concern remarks as follows: "There is no telling upon what .principkjorators arc selected now a days •when aNew York society sends all the way ~. to Boston for a provincial Lyceum lecturer on dry bones to enlighten us on the duty of saving the Union iu particular, and to display his small stock of wit in general." If Dr. Holmes wag to retaliate he mightevince his superiority in the dissection of dry bones. It is a blessed consolation to thinkcivilization has hemmed fanaticism in with so many conventional barriers, or we would be treated to an Auto da ft now nnd then.
But although this is the ago of advancement and refinement, and all that, one is now and then tempted to believe some of the piriu of ancient, days have got amongst tis—civ itization i-doing a grealdeal for us—and so it is for the Chinese, (vile the recent accounts by the last steamer.) It is true we do not pa*s our children throrgh the fire to Moloch, nor have we ahy Ganges to receive their infant forms but We have occasionally a dark story told thr nigh the columns of the daily paper, that eclipsc.i even thope methods of sacrificing life.
As the murderous sngjestions of the Baker trial are put away, and the morbid delights of tho Kodora tritgedy are failing somewhat, we were just waiting for the last n.-w horror, when it came—-listen! Miss Parkhurst is. intrusted with a sickly boy, four years of age. whose mother i* dead, and whose father is in a distant land. Tho lone'y bit, lite tender years and delicate health of this little charge would have gained tho affections of a le-imnn—but. Mi-s 1'nrkhorst laid no claim to pfleminney, perhaps she graduated in (he Lucy Stone schoolshe remembered that to spare the rod V'as to fpoil the child, an4 in lu'r zeal she t-j ari'd in ithef. The child dies suddenly Miss Parkhnrst is arrested and in the testimony we sro told by her neighbor^ that the sound of the lash waa heard for f.tur hours continuously ..accompanied by the feeble wail of her victim. The doctor's examination proves the body to have been one mas* of tninuled cuts an hrtiiso*, nud also that, there waa inflammation of the brain and bowels—but quantum Suffieit.
Duublle-s society entertains fiends una•warts, but we must notallow the multiplicity 4if crimo to detfrtui.no our opinion of society, *r we might just now conclude it to be a confederacy of ilvnd*. Midnight assaults have of late become of uniform and successive occurrence at for a qnkit min to venture beyond the limits of some great thorough fare wt. night in as rahh ioi act as to trespass within the boundaries ofiftttlesnakes.
Appropo* of crime—by a rccen* report, we learn that there are nt present i» the Blackwell's island Peniteniiary,3Sil prisoners. MS) are protectants, 242 aro Roman Catholic*! In the Alms Honsethere are 280 protfstants nnd —inwardly digest—^963catholics! j.
New York will one day be designated us •"The Monumental City." and no disrespect to her sister either. She will be a monument of futile monumental efforts. If all the cenotaphs and collossal statues that have btten projected, were each completed and in their elinted place our city might boast ofornamenta •without recurring to its police or private stores! Bat New York menwments never take root. If perchance the initiatory step it tafcen, and a corner stone is planted, it is left to the dews of Heaven to vegetate. No city in the Union talks and speculates more of such things, and no city has loss of them. Perhaps futurity will witness a day of monumental rssurectiow, and our children's children will exult in a general sprouting of corner stones. Jist now a special committee of the Board of Aldormeu arc considering lite proposed Worth monument they are even eotiteraplaplating bids for its final construction, etc. Should their questionable seal result in any thing that will cast a shadow of fruition over a corner of some public park, I shall believe that the millennium is dawning, in which the Washington, Cooper, Lafayette and Jackson piles will germinate from their respective graves.
Bye the byr an obelisk ought to be pryrcttd commemorative of the bravery and martyrdom of the horses that crossed—not the bridge of Lodi, nor the Isthmus—but the Bun pavement,
It Would occupy too much timetotell of the noble forms thai have fell, and of youthful victims that have bit the dust—suffice it to state, the ghostly shades of sacrificed horseflesh have clubbed together, and in the form of a hideous night mare, stirred up Mayor Wood to the neee*$ity of grooving or annihilating the treacherous Rqss pavement. The truth is, Broadway might as well be paved with soap* •tones, *0 for a* regards a foothold.
Dr. Yergnes* exlrwrtioti of metals from the human body by means of electricity is attracting considerable attention from medical men. He baa opened an office in Broadway, where lie reccircs jv-, Seats, and I recently conversed with one who claims exemption from mercury since the use of this new and important discovery- 1 his will he a note of glad tidings to many, and if we can leave our mercury and its attending ills in the Klectro Cheratcal bath tub, we may welcome the Bttttrea Battery and the hourly shock aa something Iras dreadful than formerly. There appears to be ao humbug about this last etep science-ward. I myself have seen microscopic globales of mercery precipitated from the bath alter beiag nsed by »a invalid who had suffered for ytearafrcna Ji»na»inifK»il of this metal in hi* svsSeta,
A« I write the old year ia eking ont, and there is every probability if a jovial com mencement of the new. Christinas without, looked anything bat merry this year, to city folks. Santa Clans came to na in an oil cloth suit and umbrella-—it was a hydropathic Christmas! and when I say it rained solid all day, you will please sot interpret the assertion as altogether figurative.
However, though the holidays set in damp there is no lack of the usual fan about these times. A grand naval splurge took piaee off the Battery, in which the District Attorney was ringleader a crowd of emigrant runners were spectators, and the ship Northern Light with a supposed cargo of filibusters the victims. According to the proceedings thus far I take it it to be all a holiday juke, and a pretty good one!
Then there is the proceed iogs of the police investigating committee and the nightly exhiof the Common Council, which improve in humor as the season draws on. But enough for the present. Allow me to wish yourself and readers all a very Happy New Year. $ .ri*.,

I am sick of this everlasting call of oames it is enough to wear out the patience of that man of bible memory. I have now leaned over this gallery railing until I have worn all the buttons offrmy coat, and holes through my elbows, and what has come of all this—nothing! and worse than nothing is likely to.— Fuur weeks!—think of that tabtf weeks -in this place, nnd without, ahy opportunity to turn an honest penny. Board, thnt lean get on the credit system, but not much longer but oysters, tobacco, cigars and whiskey, all require cash in hand. These I have been a stranger to for three weeks, except what has been begged and sponged. I am famished now for a chew of tobacco, I must have a chew of tobacco want makes men bold I could ask the President now for a chcw of tobacco calamity like mine makes men indifferent—I will have a chew. Ah! stranger, any tobacco with you? Now I am myself again that man sliall be remembered in my prayers. If I do get a place, (and I know I shall, I feel it in my bones now,) I will give that man's friend* tobacco until their cheeks stick out with fulness. This tobacco is a curious weed I.can live on short allowance, I can do without, oysters, I don't care a fig for whiskey, I am not particular about a clean shirt, but tobacco —who that loves it has courage to be without it. I could organize the House in short meter if I only had tho managementofthings 1 wo'd just shut up tho doors and lock them, drive the visitors from the galleries, and the moment the tobacco gave out, then the Speaker would be elected. I see the trouble every ballot each one takes afresh chow, and with their •lander up, as I know it must be, and a fresh chew, they will not organize—no, never! I feel just as Uiey do now stick to it my boys! There! if 1 didn't drop that blessed chew OHt of my mouth ritjht on the bald pate of that old fellow.. Now I am in trouble again, misfortunes never eome single if I have another httw I will keep my mouth shut. Now I'd organize, I would vote for any man, what's the differeuco. S'pose Fuller is a Know Nothing—I am a Know Nothing, I am. Don't these foreigners chew up all the tobacco in
out in raif-ing tobacco all tbbaccocheweM ought to be for Richardson on^that ground ^-there i* a principle all can unite upon, it is th- only Nrtional question the whole House ran unite upon.. "free Tobacco", that is my motto there is no danger of the Union on that question. But it wonV do to press this matter too hard I am for a compromise now.— These Hanks men are down on tobacco, that is they are opposed to negroes in Kansas, and some ot them are for negroes every wheTe else, and of all tobacco chewers deliver mo from a negro. It is against my principle, but ifl was a member, and out of tobacco, I would vote for Danks—principles are small things where there is no tobacco present necessities must be relieved your sticklers for.principlc are well fed nnd have tobaccd,
There! Ihe House has adjouned and

Sir Jebn FraakMn'i Partr«Betiini •f the l4U| Explorer*. Mr. Stewart, who has returned with his party of explorers by lard, frooi the head of the Great Fish liivir, where l?,e chains of Franklin's party were said to be discovered, has bronght additional confirmation of the truth of the former statement.
On Montreal Island, where their explorations commenced, they found snow shoes known to be bf Euglish make, with the name of Dr. Stanley, who was the surgeon of Sir Johi^Franklin's ship, the Ifrebus, ctit in them •by a knife. Afterward they fonnd on the same island a boat belonging to the Franklin expedition, with the name 'Terror* still distinctly visible. A piece of the boat.containing the name was brought altfng with him by Mr. 8tewart.
Among the Ifcqoiir-aux were found iron keUles, corresponding in shape and sire with thjse furnished the Franklin expidition, and bearing the mark of the British government. Other articles, known to have belonged to the expedition, were obtained from the E&qnimax and brought by the party for deposit with the British government. No bodies, however, were found, or traces of any. The report of the Esquimax was, that one man died on Montreal Island, and that the balance of them wandered on the beach of the main land opposite, until worn out by fitigue and starvation, they one by one laid themselves down and died too.
The Esquimax reported further, that Indians far to the north of them, who had seen the bhips of Franklin's party, and visited them, stated that they had both been crushed between the icebergs. Mr. Stewart took especial pains to ascertain whether the party had come to their death by fair means or not. But every inquiry the Esquimaux protested that thi had died of starvation.
REMEDY- FOR THE FOUNDER IN IIORSKS. —L send you a receipt for the founder in horses, which I have never seen in print. I have used and recommended it forfif-

founder, he will be fit for moderate service. I have seen this remedy tested so often, with perfect succcss, that I would not make five dollars difference in ahorse foundered (if done recently) and one that was not.— Cor. Country Gent.
