Death of jB*n««lp^'

The following beautiful sketch of the death of that brilliant, but most incomprehensible man, John Randolph, is taken frqm "Party Leaders," bj Baldwin: "Randolph, it\ fast decljnjng health, reached Philadelphia, whither be went to take passage from that patt. He was too late for the Liverpool packet. He expospi himself to the inclemency of the weather, took cold, which aggravated his disease, and. hastened it§ fatal teroiination. He was put to fc^ed—hii* death-bed—-in J]is lodgings in the Oity Hotel. Tbetdios* yncracies which had, of late years espepeci^lly, marked demeanor, distinguished the l^te hours of his life. The sudden bi rst of petulence which disease wiping from him, the affecting kindness anu tenderness which disease could cot wholly kike from him the ranqbljqj conversation jn the intervals of aoutp suffering, in some passages as b,riljjar]t as ever—the last gleams of thp sinliing lamp the groaning bf remorse, which a review of his past life at the bar of a stern self-judgement, drew from his contrite heart in fervid prayer the hesitating hope the trust qualified by pelf-condemnation, in the Savior, whose name he professed thq concluding act, ere the cqrtain fell upon the last scene of earth propped up by pillows ho called up witnesses to the confermatiQn of his will provided for his slaves, and the last conscious words which ficed Ijis eye and braced his sinking frame as his skeleton hand strongly on the shoulder of hjs faithful ser7 yant, John, ar,d said witii emphasis— especially for this man." And then~ this last charge upon his conscience offrfiis mind wandered away to the light, atjd ^lie scenes, and the friends of the Earty »Duy and, the mutterings of the voice growing gradually fainter, as he passed pn into the thicker shadows of the dark valley, the fluttering pulse stood still, and

John Randolph, of Roanoke, was numbered with the dead. (June 24, 1C33, aged RlVtV U.- /J a 5»ssep.J

They carried him back to his sqhtary ]iorae and burried him—in death as in jife,'unsocial and isolated—in the forest pf Roanoke. In the soil of Virginia he joved so well laid the corpse of her faithful and devqted son. They left him to j-est after the long fever of his troubled dream of life was over, hi an humble and •'sequestered grave, betweei) tiyq stately 'jpines. There let hitf} sleep on! The \gloom of their shade, and the melancholly Sighing of the wind through their boughs, are fit emblems of the life which was "breathed out in sadness and sorrow,''

KANSAS, Get. 26.

Since the"" reverse of the pro-si a very party in Kansas, brought by its own outrageous and illegal course, the free Stale men a^re exposed to a danger of different kind, but almost great. It has been for some time a spjtffcd thing that if the people of the Nor and Congniss do half their duty, the fear of Kansas becoming a slave State is unfounded, Reconviction fcas operated favorably to add to the numbers of the party: but in doing so, has maae apparent the danger I allude to—that of Demagog^aj. l^any who had never before been pro-slavery their sympathies, or had declined taking sides, now are the loudest voiced of all for freedom and the addition thus made to the ranks of the free democracy in Kansas, white it giv?s

stiU Drings in elements of the most dangerous character. It seems that wc are destined to be the victim of sham .democracy. ISFot only must we suffer all things but death from the hands of a democratic Administration, affording aid and comfort to such demopratic gamblers for office Xlchison, but the moment tho tide turns and freedom becomes popular, we find fastened upon us in the capacity of a self-constituted leader, one of the mostinveiHevAte and unreliable of those who are at once friends of the administration and of its victims.

Col. Lane, of Indiana, is a worthy pupil of that political school of which his State has been the nursery, and such men as the late Senator Whitcomb, and J. D. Briglit, and Josep'h A. Wright, and William J. Brown, (the man "who sl\ook his head,") have figured as apostles. If demagogueism has ever, in a Northern State, been feduced to a pgrfect system, it is by that school. And when Colonel Lane first came to Kansas, a)l whq knew his antecedents and the proclivities of his faction, understood that lis had come for emolument apd honors. When, at first, he ranged himself on the side where Gov. Shannon now stands, as an advocate of "National Democracy?' and "Slavery in Kansas," nobody was surprised, because that was thought to be the winning side. But when, after a while, he began to hesitate and to retract, it was a good indica^ cation that he felt the ground sliding from beneath him and, whon, finally he shifted atyiut, and fcjegan to clamor violently for freedqm, it was a reliable indication that the reaction

The tactic? lie lias'''.employed are characteristic. ifc had the address to procure the appointment of Chairman of the Executive Committee of the free State party a position which gave him a first rate opportunity for intrigue. For a time he succeeded by promises and flattery, in attaching to his interest many of the younger and more aspijrimj members: but the mask is slipping aside, and the real motives becoming apparent. Some recent revelations, too, in regard to his moral character, have excited profound disgust and that, in the confidence of his friends.

It is under these circumstances that the free State party commences its waiter campaign. I should not have entered into these particular5, but for the fact that Lane's name will go forth t,q the world as a prominent leader of the party, and, where he is kuosnj, m^tejri^lly shake the confidence of good men in its integrity Let it be understood that all the sound, Patriotio Free State riaen who take part in the movement, disclaim his leadership be is now only tolerated. We heard the paticulars yesterday of one of those strange 'episodes in life in which the old adage of 'troth is stranger than fic tiot),' was fully illustrated. About six vears since a ladv, named Mrs. MarthaAVood, ac conjpanied "by her son, his wife and a couple of children, arrived in theeity of New Bodford, Mass/ She stated Q)at me was a widow of some twenty-four years' standing, her husband having been a mate of a whaler had been lost at sea.

The family have resided for the greater portion of the time on Liberty itraet, Mr. Wood, her son, working at h« trade which is that ofa cooper.

Yesterday morning a grey-headed and care worn man exiled at U»« restdece of the family, and seeing Mr. Wood, inquired for the widow, who wing called into the room, while gating intently 00 the 'stranger, whose eyes We're axed mournfully on her, asked to know Jhis business. 'Do you not know me, Martha?* said he, and as the sound of his voice, like the memory of an olden melody met her ear, she gave vent to a hVsteffcfcl cry arid fainted the arms which' w#e open to receive her.
